How to prepare for DS's first winter ??

Hi all,

DS is a year old and this will be his first winter - we missed the last one on account of not being in the country :)

I have a thick jacket with a hood and a couple of wooly hats and also some gloves. We also have the John Lewis footmuff for his pram which keeps him pretty snug..

Just wanted to know what else do I need? Is a pramsuit/snowsuit essential? Or will a couple of thick blankets do the trick?
Also, I've been thinking of getting a stroller for DS... how do I keep him warm in that (the footmuff will be of no use)

TIA :)

This is the UK not Alaska! Have a rain cover, a snowsuit maybe and a cosy toes. I am sure he will survive!Smile

Why will the footmuff be of no use?

Are you planning on putting him at the end of the garden in his pram?

If the footmuff you bought won't fit a stroller you can get cheap, universal ones from argos or asda living.
I don't think you need too much tbh, just dress him similar to how you'd wrap yourself up for a cold day: hat (those that fasten under the chin are good), warm socks, vest under a top and/or jumper, warm coat, gloves if he'll keep them on (maybe those with a string that goes up one sleeve and down the other to prevent them getting lost).
Over night if the price of gas is so astronomical that you daren't turn the heating up a sleeping bag or child's duvet should be fine if you dress him in warm fleecy pjs (saw some lovely ones in primark the other week) and warm socks.

Thanks all.

TEE The footmuff will not fit the stroller...

Any recommendation on where I can get some warm socks... All the ones that I've found don't look warm enough...

That footmuff is a universial one?

Is he walking yet?

OneLittleToddleTerror · 28/10/2013 15:19

I just had normal cotton socks. When outside, I had either the snowsuit or the footmuff on. I assume he's not walking outdoors yet? Then you shoudln't have to worry about warm socks.

I bought some from tesco, they're thick with grips on the bottom. This was for ds however, so 2 yrs ago now, and I've kept them for dd.

Last year I bought ds some welly socks from Sainsbury's, big thick ones that come right up to his thighs. He wears them at night. I got myself some too, they're really warm!

mumofboyo · 28/10/2013 15:25

That footmuff should fit any stroller btw, if it's got 2 slits at the top, 2 at the side and one between the legs, you'll be able to unclip the straps on the stroller and push them through the relevant slits. It's almost the same as the one I have which has fit 2 different pushchairs.

I would think about his room at night. We have a thermometer on our monitor and it gets to 14degrees. This wakes up my chap. We bought an electric heater to keep him warm during the night. Other friends have put a cardi on over a grow bag.. Or tights under his trousers/Jim jams!

And get some carpool in because it's the season of colds!!

Babies don't need to be wrapped up that much. One layer more than we'd wear iirc. His old is your baby?

HerrenaHarridan · 29/10/2013 09:54

Tights for under his trousers. Socks are a pain in the arse.

Beware the mistake I and most of their new mums I knew made.

Long sleeve vest, tights, sleep suit, snow suit, blankets then pack into a heated car Blush

Good boots for you, you don't want to slip while carrying baby

OneLittleToddleTerror · 29/10/2013 09:56

That's why I only use snowsuits when not using the car. It's a pain with carseats. I have a footmuff for the infant carseat too. I often took the carseat and put on the travel system. I think it's worth the bit of money for convience. Same with footmuffs in the pushchair. If I'm transfering from carseat to pushchair, then I wouldn't have put the snowsuit on. HTH.
