How to keep baby warm on winter walks

Helo

What will I need to put my 5 week old baby in when we go out for walks when it gets cold? At the moment its still quite warm and we go out everyday in his carrycot pram with a sleepsuit, cardigan and hat and he is covered by blankets.

As it gets colder, what should I dress him in? I'm not keen on a pramsuit because it would mean waking him to get him dressed every time we go out or come back into the warmth. What do other parents do during winter walks?

Thanks

Another blanket or 3. When it got really cold (snowy) last year I warmed a bean heat pack to just above body temperature and put it right at the foot end so the carry cot was snugly warm.

I have used pramsuits with DS1 and would just unzip them when I got him inside and leave him in the so that he wouldn't get too hot. A lot of the time though we just dressed him the same as you with a blanket on him (cellular if its not too cold, nice woolly one if it is really chilly) then his buggy snuggle, and if it's a bit windy I always put on the rain cover as it keeps the wind off and keeps his cosy.

When it gets really cold you might find that even blankets aren't a substitute for a snowsuit. I did the same as Eletheomel and often just unzipped the snowsuit when we came inside. Babies sleep through loads though and with dd2 I can pick her up out of the buggy, unzip her snowsuit, remove it and lift her into her cot and zip up her grobag without her waking!

My DS is a very light sleeper and would never be able to do what mummyx2 manages! I do get away with removing blankets and unzipping pram suit sometimes tho!

Pramsuit definitely. I had a great one with poppers for my babies and was easy to open up once inside. Also kept them properly warm when I needed to get them out for a cuddle or feed outside. Blankets just can't stay round them reliably enough in that situation.

DD was born in Feb this year, and it was absolutely freezing until she was about 10 weeks old. I have dogs and she came with me to walk them in all weathers.

TBH she was a really hot baby (still is) and so I didn't wrap her up massively. She wore a vest and a sleepsuit (sometimes just the sleepsuit), a jacket of some sorts and then a blanket. If she was in the sling, my body heat did the job of the blanket and I just put Ugg-type booties on her. They were great. Also I would always take a pashmina-type scarf with me to wrap round her if it was windy or threatening rain.

She wore a snowsuit about 3 times I think. She was never cold - actually I was more worried about overheating her.

mumofboyo · 28/10/2013 15:06

Dd was a newborn last winter and we found the snowsuit was too warm for her so we dressed her in fleecy sleepsuits, vest, coat and hat, with a warm blanket over her in the car and a the pram cover when outside. She was warm enough.

I always find that thin layers are better at keeping them warm than one big coat, and that way if they do get too warm they can be stripped off bit by bit until comfy.

bundaberg · 28/10/2013 15:09

get a nice wool layer in... keep him toasty without being bulky

lagoonhaze · 28/10/2013 15:25

Jo Jo Polartec all in ones. Thin enough not to interfer with how tight you can get harness on any car seat too.

One of those ' bug in a rug' wraps. Can put feet in and then wrap around and unwrap when in. Add blankets if cold.

Never used snowsuits even in ski locations as hard to regulate temp. In snowy conditions have in sling as then body temp also. I have them in merino wool baby vest and sleep suit. With thick socks/ woollen booties over feet, warm cardigan, balaclava warm hat/ scarf, and gloves. Then put in a ' bug in rug' wrap/ blanket and pop in sling. Then either zip our coat up around them or add a small blanket over sling at front tucked in. As soon as we go inside its boiling and have to take hat/ gloves/ blanket/ wrap off

DeathMetalMum · 28/10/2013 16:47

We used snowsuits and blankets/cosytoes removing the cosy toes and blankets when we got home and making sure dd's head was uncovered from hat/hood, I was also usually able to unzip her suit/coat halfway at least.

We also used to leave her somewhere cool so right in front of the front door or kitchen is the best place in our house occasionally we would open a window. Wouldn't dare move her from the pram though to scared to wake her.

fairylightsintheautumn · 28/10/2013 21:48

I really don't think the UK ever gets cold enough for the padded snowsuits. Normal vest, clothes and maybe a fleecy pram suit is fine assuming you then have blanket / cosy toes etc + raincover if really windy. JoJo Maman do good fleecy all in ones with fold over feet and hand cuffs.
