Holidays in 4 weeks. Is it OK to start potty training now?

I have not read much about it. But a friend came and pointed out that it would be appropiate to start to potty train DS, 25 months, given that we are having such a nice wheather. He could play around in the garden nappyless. Also, his baby brother is 9 months now(!) So DS1 must have recovered of the trauma of baby's arrival .
But, we are going on holidays in four weeks. Do you think that it's ok to start on Monday (we are away this weekend)? Or should I wait till we come back?

Ahh, also, next Friday our first au-pair ever is coming. That shouldn't be an obstacle to a straightforward Potty t. right??
Ohh, I should have done some reading before, I feel silly asking these things now.

25 months is very young. Unless he's showing real signs of being ready I'd leave it. When he's ready it won't matter what the weather is like.

Ahhhh (sighed relieved).
I thought that DS was considered "old" for these matters. My mum is always going on about how easy was to potty t. me and my sister before we were 2.

He does tell me when he does a wee (after he has done it). And often he tells me "big poo". But he does fill to limit his nappy at night.

Can you recommend any website to learn how to do the training?

He's not "old" at all - it seems that most children aren't ready until they're closer to 3 than to 2. Don't worry too much about it; relax and let him guide you. You'll know when he's ready. Don't think so much in terms of "training" him, it's more that he needs to learn the signals that mean he needs a wee, and he'll only do that when he's ready to.

Don't worry about the night nappies yet either; most children are dry in the day long before they're dry at night - treat them as separate things.

Don't feel silly asking either. The mumsnet collective's advice is better than any book you can read .

I would say wait until after the holiday too. like WWB says if he's ready, he's ready regardless of the weather. If you wanted to you could get the potty out and start telling him what it's about. I planted the seed of the idea long before we started properly doing the training bit, and had a book with a story about potty training to read to her.

Anyway, the summer won't be over in 5/6 weeks' time - well it had better not be! - so you have plenty of time.

Thanks for the advice
One thing I thought is that it would be good if his teddy bear was in nappies too. DS found it funny and sometimes says that the teddy has a poo and needs a nappy change. So when potty-time arrives for DS, he will see teddy wearing pants also!
I like the idea of a book on this...
Well, then I will 'see' you again in a few months time!

i would wait too
my dd was 2 and 10mths and it happened within 3 weeks as easy as pie, she understood and we had a wee book encouraging her with stickers.

you'd like to be able to relax on hol without thinking we'res the loo in case of emergency.

i dont understand the rush about training unless its to do with the nursery facilty the child is at.

Surfermum · 05/07/2006 21:43

DD was given her book, but I think I've seen them in Asda.

personally leave it based on age....

jamese · 07/07/2006 23:07

Another leave it advice from me. My DD is 2yr 8months and just done it in 3 weeks no problem.

Life is much easier, I have to say, but the 1st week or so was hard, but then just got it..

I would def wait until he is ready - hopefully we will get some good weather for a couple more months...
