Where do babies come from, Mummy?

Or, more precisely, "how do babies get in your tummy mummy?". Mmm, well, erm ...' I thought I would be ready with good basic answer to this one, but unfortunately never got round to thinking about it much. After all, I wasnt expecting the question quite so soon. Dd is just four!!

I did mutter something about mummies having eggs in their tummy, but that was about it. She now sees herself as a human Nemo, as she is an only one, so thinks I just had one egg!

Anyway, wise mumsnetters, can you help me with a suitable answer please, cos I just KNOW it wion't be long until I am asked again!

Thanks in advance chaps.

Dd asked me when she was about 4, and I told her the basic facts that she had asked for. I think the key is to answer the question that they ask you, without going into more detail unless they ask for it. That way their curiosity is satisfied, but you don't confuse or upset them by giving them more information than they wanted

I told DS! that daddy gave mummy his special egg/seed to add to mummy's egg. He then asked how did daddy give it to you!!! I said with his privates.
He then moved on to does the baby come out of your belly button..... so I had to tell him no, from mummy's privates. Eyes wide he said did I come from there!!! I then let him watch discovery health with me and he saw babbies being born.

At first he thought I ate the babby heee heee

Thanks for your advice chaps, I now feel ready for next time! I think the seed/egg to add to mummy's is a good one. Will try it and see what question follows!

Twiglett, am going to have a look at the book you suggested. It also links to another couple that look good. I like Babette Cole usually anyway, although will check out the 'graphic' bits first!

ds (3.5) asked me how the baby got out of my tummy, so I told him that there was a special way out by my privates. Now he keeps asking me to show him the 'special way'! I tkink maybe I was too honest.

I seemed to get away with it by saying that the egg only develops when you meet someone you love very much.

So far we have got away with "Daddy put the baby in Mummy's tummy" and we have read "Mummy Laid and Egg" by Babette Cole ... it is and excellent book and the pictures are hysterical!!

My four year old asked endless questions when I was pregnant and I chickened out a little. My explaination was one that I'd heard somewhere before but can't think where.

I told him that when a mummy and daddy love each other very much, there's to much love and it makes a whole new person which was what was growing inside of me. He asked how the baby came out and I said it came out of mummy's flower (his name for it!) So then he asked if the doctor had to push on my head to get the baby out. Can of worms!
