Is it normal for toddler to be ill so frequently?

Hi all.

I'm feeling rather deflated tonight as my 22 month old is ill AGAIN! Every 2 to 3 weeks he catches something or other and there we go again several days of worry, fever battling, clingyness, mealtime battles, childcare issues, taking time off work problems etc.

He is at a childminder 5 half days a week and I take him to lots of baby groups so he gets exposed to a lot I guess but is it normal to be ill this much? As well as feeling sorry for my little guy it's wearing me down....

My son is the same, 18 months and seems to get everything going. His older sister on the other hand appears pretty robust, although also he is exposed to all her germs from pre-school too, which she wasn't at his age.

We seem to have a bottle of calpol permanently on the go. I just think it's one of those things, but do go and get him checked out by the GP if only for your peace of mind.

My DD is the same. So much for breastfed kids getting less ill. Having said that, she was never ill until I stopped at 7 months old. We had 3 months of no illness over summer but she was consistently ill prior to that and has been ill non-stop since start of Sept. I'm a SAHM and work super hard to ensure she eats a very healthy diet. She sleeps brilliantly and we have a great routine. We wash hands and generally pretty good on cleanliness. But she's still always ill!

Anyone have any ideas for how to improve this? I just started her with the UDOs choice infant probiotic to see if that helps.

Yes, one cold ends and the next begins. Throw in some other childhood illnesses (hand foot mouth, chickenpox, the odd D&V bug) and I think we have about 3 disease-free days during the autumn/winter/spring months.

It gets better when they're around 3yo, but before that time they will pretty much get any bug floating around. DS1 is 2.5yo now and I can tell that things are gradually getting a bit better, he fights off common colds a bit quicker now. Except of course we're doing the whole thing again with DS2 (4mo) Hmm
