Supermarkets

I have a lovely 16 month old dd who has just started to hate supermarket shopping. She has discovered she can stand up in the trolley seat and consequently needs to be carried whilst I push the trolley! We are just about ok with supermarkets that have straps in the trolley seats but now must avoid tescos, marks' and any others who don't offer this facility. Any advice? Ps note to supermarkets please all install the trolley strap eh?!

I try asking them to spot the tomatoes etc or give them a book to read

Online shopping.

If they're available we use those trolleys with the car at the front. Ds loves them and is never a nightmare on them. And dd isn't squashed to one side like when they're in the standard side-by-side things. They're a bugger to steer though and I end up crashing into anything or anyone in my way!

Otherwise I let him walk and put things into the trolly (if there's nothing breakable of course) which keeps him occupied. He is 2.6 though, so slightly older than your dd.

Jobs to do, asking him to chose between two products whenever you don't really care (bread brands, yogurts etc), holding the list (or more sensibly "the list" Wink).

I have so used reins as a makeshift trolley strap. Put reins on child, then fashion the actual rein into a strap to attach to the trolley.

Mine was like that. Except there were no straps on trolley seats anywhere.
I tied him into them using reins. The one time I put him in the trolley itself he flung groceries everywhere.

Get a baby harness for a fiver on amazon and use that

Great tips thanks all. I will invest in the harness and play the help mummy game
