I'm a childminder and one of my babies mums has asked me if she's allowed to cut his hair yet? I laughed and said of course, why not but she's been told by someone you shouldn't until they are 1! I said i'd check on here for her but i think its probably some hairdressers won't for health and safety, i think its ok for her to though.

He's 9 months btw.

Thanks

hra, just to clarify - by cutting your baby's hair will in no way change the texture, make it grow faster or change it from curly to straight and vice versa, it is just a myth. Ok, what happens is that your natural hair grows out of the follicle tapered (to a point) so it feels soft to touch. When you cut or shave the hair it is cut bluntly therefore gives an appearance and texture that is thicker and corser. However, when that hair falls out and grows back again it will grow back the same way....tapered. The only way to change the growth of a hair is to damage the hair follicle/dermal papilla i.e. electrolysis, lazer etc.

Hair like nails are dead matter with no nerve endings.

Hope that clears up the myth Wink

WHat des she mean 'allowed' ?
Its her decision - and I don't think anyone has ever been prosecuted for it.

Hi -
in certain cultures they believe "if you cut the hair before they start babbling/talking or turn 1- it will slow the speech down!!!!!
(old folk tale of course)Grin

My Mum cut my hair at 3 days old when I came out of hospital did me no harm.

GwynAndBearIt · 16/02/2011 09:45

Just jumping in to give a tip, - if she can possibly cut the hair while wet it's a whole lot easier, the hair will fall in chunks stuck together and easy to catch. There's nothing worse than fine baby hair floating into the child's face, eyes and on clothing. Smile

I cut DS's hair before he was one. Used his nail scissors and sat him in the high chair whilst doing it so he couldn't escape! Grin

I cut DD1's hair about 9mths, it was very long at the sides but shorter at the back and looked silly. I tidyed up the sides so she had a chin length bob.
She was born with a huge mop of hair and had pigtails by 7mths!

My son was entirely bald until he was two.

At about three his hair was longer but sadly the hairdresser was an evil troll who was horrid to him and he's refused a haircut since. His dad/my partner has long hair too so I guess it's what he knows.

He does get mistaken for a girl occassionally but if he's happy with his hair then there's no harm.

My DD is 16 weeks and needs a trim to get her fringe out of her eyes already! Just waiting for her to fall asleep for long enough to let me do it...

Hi Ladies,
My little boys only 7 months but his hair is a bit of a mess.. whats the best way to cut it? (doing it myself at home as i refuse to pay the same for my sons two inchs as my full lenght hair! lol)

Someone said to hold it between first and second finger with fingers against head and cut against other side of ur fingers so its all of the same length but im not too sure if that would be too short?

lilmamma · 07/03/2012 08:22

my parents friends are indian, and their little boy,had his frst hair cut at a year old,he went to india to have it cut,and they do a religous ceremony at the same time.

I trimmed ds's hair the day he was born. Grin
he had ridiculously long side bits past his ears which as he had black hair, looked bizarre.
The midwife gave me some nail scissors and I had a bit of a tidy.

That said, he had a pathological hatred of hairdressers as a toddler, and had a series of wonky fringes, cut when he was asleep. We solved the problem by getting a mobile hairdresser, and sitting him in front of Thomas dvds.
