hi

I'm thinking of getting a Manduca sling. I have some back issues and that one looked the best as it had a lumber support. but I wondered if with that one you can have baby facing forward.

if not can anyone recommend one that is good for bad backs and can have the option of baby facing forward. as I thought as he gets older that might be quite nice for him.

any thoughts would be great...thanks

Hi. You can have them on your back facing forward but not on your front facing forward. I.e they always face into you in the manduca. Although there is a hip carry position but I have yet to master that one! Otherwise love my manduca and can still carry averaged sized one year old son in it comfortably for quite a while.

Most sling wearers will point you to all the research about how bad facing forward is for the baby's spine. I don't have a link but if you google it it's easily found.

Lots of people love the Manduca. I love the ergo performance. Have newborn insert for when they're tiny. It's great.

Ps if you search for sling libraries they're are loads of them around and it gives you the chance to try the various types out.

Manducas rock! But no, can't face out as bad for the baby's back apparently. The only problem I have with this is it means my 16 month old gets a crick in her neck twisting round all the time. Can't believe that's healthierGrin
I tend to use time in Manduca as snugly fun chatty time to entertain her to avoid too much twisting round.

I have a Beco and a Manduca. Personally I find the Manduca the better of the 2 (though not by much) for back support. It's a great sling and I love the fact you can cross the back straps, feels much more supportive that way. Dd seems to prefer the Beco though, no idea why.

didn't realise forward facing could be bad for their back...I don't really know that much about them. Glad I asked now!

but that's great thanks I'll get one ordered tonight! Smile

I hired a manduca as also have neck and back issues. It was better than the babybjorn and the like but still left me uncomfortable after 45 mins :-(

facing forward will also hurt your back as it distributes the weight differently.

I have the manduca and the ergo performance and wear them masses and masses as refluxy 6 month old will only sleep in a sling! To me they are both great, but manduca slightly has the edge, as it is very adjustable including crossing over the straps, which is really nice for my back. It also has a built in newborn insert that will make it better value if/when future DCs arrive.

Although you can't carry facing forward, the babies can easily look out and around, while feelijg aafe ans able to chat to you Smile DS has just started enjoying carried on my back too - great for me as I can get on with far more things, plus it takes any strain off your shoulders and feels practically weightless!

You can put them on your hip or back in the manduca. Dd loves going on our back at 22 months and even naps that way.
The poster who was uncomfy - you can have the straps cross over or straight which makes a difference.
