What's the protocol? Phoned nursery and told them, keeping her off today. We're getting ready to go Boots. She's been in our bed this morning as well as ours so strip beds and just Hoover like mad? HmmHmmHmm

Nitty gritty comb and lots of conditioner works best.

Can you park her in front of the TV so she stays still enough to comb properly?
I've found chocolate buttons for the child and wine for me help. I also need my reading glasses to make sure I can see all the wee buggers. Grin

my 6yo has them again too
Sad
nitty gritty comb is a tenner in Boots. 6.99 inc delivery direct from nittygritty.co.uk, mine should be arriving todayGrin

So generally stay away from lotions and potions?

The first time is horrible, then the next time & the next time & the next time, meh, not so much! If I told you that you still might be dealing with them when your DCs are 17 or over you'd freak out right? They are a very very very normal part of childhood. So DO NOT WORRY!!

So, buy conditioner and a nitty gritty comb. Do EVERYBODY in the house every other day.

They don't survive long off hair, so don't worry too much about bedding.

You will get to a point when you think they are all gone. Send her back to school at that point but keep on checking EVERY NIGHT. In my experience it is very hard to get rid of the persistent last one or two lice.

MarjorieAntrobus · 08/10/2013 09:50

I dunno about lotions and potions. We did do that the first time we had them. Expensive. Didn't stop us getting them the next time. Better to have a preventative regime in place imho.

Noggie · 08/10/2013 10:09

Chemist should give you hedrin for free on minor ailments scheme . Repeat treatment week later to be sure they have gone. We now use the vosene shampoo and spray conditioner to try and dissuade them.

ElBombero · 08/10/2013 10:25

Oh bugger would of picked that up. Don't they like vosene? Just leaving boots £50 lighter Confused

I wouldn't have kept her off nursery TBH - she will have picked them up off some other child there anyway.
No need to hoover.
Wet hair, conditioner, nit comb (the nitty gritty one is v good) then rinse out conditioner. Repeat daily until you don't comb out any live lice, then comb again not more than 4 days later. (They mature and lay eggs again 5 days after hatching)
Check maybe once a week for any signs. You might find the Vosene stuff helps, another product they are less keen on is tea tree - so tea tree shampoos etc. But virtually no deterrent will work all the time.
Don't worry and don't panic - nits are fairly common in schools, they're not harmful and it's not a stigma to have them. They like clean hair best!

Tailtwister · 08/10/2013 11:37

We haven't had them (yet!), but I've heard that the Vosene 1 in 3 preventative lice shampoo and the leave in spray works quite well. I use a nitty gritty comb and conditioner every 3/4 days and we've escaped so far. We're bound to fall foul of them eventually though and I'm dreading it.

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 08/10/2013 17:34

I have just spent an hour and a half wet combing DD's hair with the conditioner and Nitty Gritty and I don't think I have even got them all Sad

ElBombero · 08/10/2013 19:55

Aww it's awful, I got the nitty gritty comb from boots, currently 25% off too quite impressed. .ot stopped treating hair, washing bedding, hoovering all day. Gonna treat myself to a vino I think

Hedrin works really well and saves on the endless combing with conditioner!

NewJewels · 10/10/2013 15:58

the good thing about a two year old is that if it gets too much for you shaving their head shouldn't leave emotional scarring ;-)
