Alternatives to lanolin nipple cream

As an excema sufferer I have always avoided lanolin. Have always been told it is terrible stuff and to be avoided at all costs. I can't remember the science behind it - something to do with the larger molecules.

Anyway am 34 weeks and want to breast feed but already getting excema on my breasts and cracked nipples. Don't want to let this stop me breast feeding before I have even got going. Want to get a good nipple cream but everything seems to have lanolin in it. Has anyone found any good alternative.
I usually use a combination Of Steroids, aveeno cream and double base but don't really want to use steroids while breast feeding and don't think the others are robust enough on their own.

You can get it in the UK.

Ok, first of all, plenty of mums manage to breastfeed without using any creams. I know that, without excema, if your nipples are getting sore and painful, then you need to get latch checked.

With excema in the picture, you could use:

  • hindmilk - this is very greasy, and free!
  • olive oil
  • any sort of non-medicated cream (so aveeno and double base) and just wipe off excess before feeding

I used coconut oil which worked fine.

I'll be watching this closely as I also have excema and didn't get on with lanolin last time I breastfed. Sorry no ideas though.

Thanks for replies. Will try that nipple butter as have used calendula before and was pretty good stuff. I have some calendula ointment actually but wasn't sure I was safe to use in pregnancy. There seems to be conflicting advice on the Internet! So I might just keep going with what I normally use and try nipple butter once baby comes.
Hind mild you say? That's breast milk right? Well can't hurt to try and as you say is free xxxx

This stuff is amazing - Green Baby Nipple Balm. I've found it on eBay for you as I can't find anywhere with it in stock, and it's been a while since I last bought it. I used Lansinoh and was in agony - my nipples were cracked and even with the Lansinoh they stuck to my bra or breast pads and when I removed it a tiny layer of skin was pulled off. Nothing helped. Until I found Green Baby nipple balm and nipple shields - the big plasticky ones that hold clothes off your nipple, not the little nipple guards. Rub a small amount of breast milk onto the nipple after feeding, allow it to dry then apply a thin layer of Green Baby and a nipple shield - worked wonders for allowing mine to heal. I can't recommend it enough!
