Great at going to sleep, rubbish at staying asleep?

Am I doing something wrong? I'd be so grateful for any tips...

My almost 4mo is good at going to bed. He seems to like the routine at bedtime (last feed, bath, massage, pyjamas, story and bed) and will fall asleep in minutes. Took a while to get there! He will stay asleep from about 8pm to 11pm then he will be up every two hours henceforth!

I keep reading that by now he should be able to go further between feeds. He certainly does in the day, where its about every three hours. He's not what I'd call a hungry baby. So, what is going on?

When his reflux was bad, he found comfort sleeping on me, on his tummy every night for a good few weeks. Have I been perpetuating the "I fancy a cuddle so I will ask for one" syndrome? What on earth do I do about it? I'm so tired I'm losing the will!

Thanks for reading and have a Strawberry cheesecake!

Have you looked up 4 month sleep regression?

Have you thought about doing another feed after his story or a dreamfeed later?

Littlebruiser · 03/10/2013 08:51

Thank you kittencuddles!! I've just looked up 4 month sleep regression, does fit in, so I'm having a good old read and taking some comfort that it will pass....

Have tried dreamfeeding on advice from NCT group leader... It worked for a short time but once he coughed and spluttered so I daren't try that one again... :/

I try not to feed after his story for the reflux, as he leaks milk in bed so I try to give him time to burp after/digest a little bit of his last feed if that makes sense.

Thank you so much for your suggestions though, it's food for thought and has given me a new avenue to look down... Feeling not so despondent now :) x

Hi QTPie, he is demanding and also feeding a lot after his initial block of sleep. It hasn't worked just offering comfort, he definitely looks for a cuddle and a feed, and jolly big ones they are too... he will go back to sleep in his cot afterwards quite happily. Then he will be looking for another feed two hours later... I'm amazed at the accuracy some nights!!

What's his feeding like during the day? My Dd is 4 months and very distracted during the day at the moment. Sometimes they then have to make up for it at night.

Yes they do follow a schedule in the day... every three hours give or take.

Typically he wakes at 6am and plays 'til 8am - nap - play, 11am, 2pm, 5pm then bed routine about 7.30 for 8pm. Then awake for a feed at 11pm then it's 2-hourly until 8am again. If I'm out and about it does change a little bit but I tend to choose carefully so I can bf. Writing it down here looks like he has a lot of naps... Do you think he naps too much in the day?

He has been distracted lately kc - he will hear something and schlop off the boob in its general direction! Perhaps he's not feeding as much as I think he is... he is very active when not napping and is becoming quite boisterous (hence username).

I'll try and proactively feed a bit more and see if this helps... thank you both so much QTP and kc! x

Hi I just wanted to update you and in case it is useful for anyone else...

We went to see the paediatrician in the end as he was so hungry and it went on for over two weeks! He was not gaining much weight either and was just so unhappy bless him.

I decided with the help of the pead to try formula as combination at night only and it helped immediately, obviously, then gradually weaned him completely on to aptamil no.1. I just replaced a bf with a ff every few days, then it was bf at night only, then as of last week 100% ff.

Its like he is a different baby. We are no longer needing the ranitidine. He is just so much happier now. He's not gaining huge amounts of weight but really thriving. He has two-three naps in the day and sleeps 4-6 hours at a time at night. Can't say I am much more rested as I am exhausted from playing now! Lol! Thanks for your help ladies x
