Teething + calpol?

Today is the second day I've had to give my 3 month old a small dose of calpol. This is after anbesol, powders, teething rings and general comforting. I even tried a cold washed carrot this morning and at the time she loved it!

Her teeth are coming through, i can see them and sometimes feel them on the bottom. She seems to be really suffering. Bad poos, smelly wee, red cheeks, dribble, mucous, hot gums, flustered etc.

She screamed most of yesterday to the point I had to put her in the cot and have 5 mins so I could calm down and get my head straight. Today is the same so again as a last resort I've given her calpol and once again its worked. She's snoozing for the first time today.

I'm feeling guilty about doing this.

Am I doing the right thing or could I do better?

Don't feel guilty, she's in a lot of pain so painkillers make sense.

My DS is 3months and is having similar symptoms. He also screamed a lot yesterday! I've given him calpol yesterday and today, and both times it helped to sooth him.

If I had toothache and wasn't given paracetamol I would think it cruel. You can ease your poor baby's pain with Calpol, so do it.

I feel a bit guilty about it too, but comfort myself with the fact that sleep is about the best medicine there is for nearly anything - if Calpol helps your child to sleep then any harm from Calpol must surely be offset by the increase in sleep?

Not a medic, just a point of view.

Thank you. She's woken up, sat in her chair busy chatting to the trees through the patio doors bless her.

I gave my DS calpol or baby nurofen every day for almost 2 weeks when he was cutting his top 4 teeth at the same time at around 7mo. I say go for it. Nothing else worked fr my little boy and I tried everything.

Don't feel guilty. Your child was in pain and you gave her pain relief. Your her mother and you did what you believe to be best. I'm in a similar boat at the moment. Calpol is a for babies and toddlers, it's not like your giving opium like they did in the Victorian times.

I feel even less guilty this time cause I found that's boots has it's own brand version which is cheaper.

My GP told me not to skimp on Calpol during teething as it takes away the pain, so I happily does DD with that as needed (subject to the maximum dosage of course).

AliBingo · 01/10/2013 17:41

Oh and I buy Asda or Tesco's own which is even cheaper (£1.50 a bottle).

MrsFlorrick · 01/10/2013 17:46

Oh dear. It's hard when they are in so much pain.

And that is the point of calpol. To stop babies feeling the pain of teething amongst other things.

Along with calpol I used nelsons teething powder for my two. A very good combo. Always worked.

I think my DS lived on calpol while he went through horrendous teething.

Don't fret. Give calpol.

And to the smug smuggies who claim their child never had calpol. Well they made their DC suffer in pain instead. How is that good?

I don't mean to be nasty but you feel guilty about what, relieving the pain. We piggybacked nurofen and calpol when it was really bad, they slept, we slept, everyone happy!

Thurlow · 01/10/2013 20:38

Don't feel guilty. As far as I understand it Calpol should be rationed if it is just for bringing down a temperature, but not if your child is really in pain. You've certainly tried everything else!
