Am I mad?...

...I've just let the dds (aged 9.5 and 7) go to the local park alone.

It is 2 minutes walk from here, but not within eyeshot. They will have to cross 2 roads - 1 is very quiet, and the other is quiet, but also has a zebra crossing. They are very familiar with the park, have been going there since they are born. They are going to stay in the area of the park nearest to the house, and are coming back in 1/2 hour.(they have a watch).

They know this is a trial run, and that if they come back with tales of arguments / misdemeanours / problems, they won't be allowed to do it again. I think it is a good chance for them to gain a little independence in as safe an environment as it is possible to give them, while still being independent (iyswim).

Would you have done this? Am I mad? They are both fairly sensible, dd1 more so than dd2...

aaah bless them.

I don't think you're mad a at all, but I imagine you are worrying a bit. put your feet up and enjoy the quiet!

Sounds fine to me.

Phew! I thought everyone was sitting there thinking "how can we tell her she's lost her mind".

I'm sure they'll be OK, but it's scary nonetheless.

Well, they've come back and didn't argue, kill each other or get run over...

So next time I'll let them go for 45 mins...

Sounds lovely, does anyone think it would be ok to send my pre-schoolers to the park alone so I can have some peace too

emsiewill · 27/06/2006 16:39

Bring 'em to mine - they can go with my dds lol.

It sounds good to me.

am training my 4 and 6 year old to go off
alone. not crossing major roads but they go to playgrounds where there's no road to cross, such as on a campsite. and then they come back alone. they really like to practise being independent. and they like going into shops alone too to buy things.
