A friend stopped me out side school today and asked me to help her so I am asking you lot. LOL She dosnt have a computer and knows nothing about football what so ever . She has asked me to tell her about the world cup ,the England team and who they are (not much then ) She needs it so she can have a conversation with an 11 year old boy who has the understanding of a 6 year old . She really is a smashing lady and works with kids who have learning dificulties . All i do is drool over David Beckham . So can you tell me all you know that will help her . TIA

well I know a fair bit but I'm not sure which bits you want. Do you want to know what's happening in the tournement or about the players in the England team?

peasinapod · 26/06/2006 18:04

A bit of both really but something or anything really that she could have a conversation with a six year old about . Hopefully he would understand what she was on about and it would keep his interest going . OK I will settle for anything as I know nothing LOL

Sorry, I don't really know what 6 year olds know about football, but heres an idea. She could ask the young lad what he thinks about the formation Sven Goran Erikkson is using. If he is into football, he will understand what she means by this.
Formation is how the players are set up on the pitch i.e 4,4,2 would be 4 defenders, 4 midfield players and 2 attackers. Whatever number this is, it must add up to 10, so exc. the goalie.

England have just got through to the quarter finals where they will play Portugal on 01 July. Manager Sven goran Ericssan Team captain David Beckham, main stricker Wayne Rooney (just come back after breaking his foot), Michael Owen has had to go home early due to an injury(he wasn't 100%) fit in the first place. errrrr what else? Favourites to win are probably Argentina although I wasn't bowled over by them, I think Germany have put in a superior performance so far.

Captain is David Beckham - takes free kicks and penalties and plays for Real Madrid.
Goalie is Paul Robinson (plays for Spurs).
Defenders - Ashley Cole (Arsenal), John Terry (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Man United), Gary Neville (Man United).
Midfield - Stevie Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Joe Cole (Chelsea).
Goalscorers - Wayne Rooney (Man United), Michael Owen (Newcastle)
England play next on Saturday afternoon against Portugal.
Any good?

Common view is that England seem to have alot of excellent players but they're not playing as team yet. They have flashes of brilliance but aren't living up to the potential. Is this because Sven Goran keeps changing the strategy? (sometimes because he has to - Michael Owen's injury, other times because the folly of his original team selection leaves few other options - choosing to bring a 17 year old that hadn't seen any Premiership action)
Everyone's hoping that as Wayne Rooney's fitness improves he'll become the inspirational player that's needed to galvanise the team on to better things.
Oh and stop criticising Becks as at least he's scored a goal.....

This all seems good to me any more . Thanks .

joe cole is standing out as a marvel so far and peter crouch does a robot dance when (if!) he scores.

fransmom · 27/06/2006 11:11

last time he scored he didn't! i do agree that england aren't playing together very well yet, although they do have flashes as somebody put it.

offside rule: an attacking player cannot be in an advanced position of the last defender (not including goalie) until the ball (whilst in possession of the attacking team) has been played.

teams swap ends at half time. now in the final stages, if the scores are level at the end of full time (after any injury time has been played), the match then goes into extra time - half hour split into two periods/halves - similar to a mini match, the teams swap ends halfway through. anything else? x
