Play pens- can you recommend one and are they totally different from travel cots?

Looking at them in Argos- one those advertised look just like me travel cot.

Does anyone just use a travel cot? Are play pens much bigger? ( I would have thought so).

Any recommendations?

I can't recommend this one enough:

Mine is actually a Mothercare one but looks identical to this and I couldn't find a link to the MC one - I used it for ds1 as well so maybe it is out of date. I tried a travel cot-style one for ds1 and he just cried in it. This cage-style one we call the 'baby jail', but it is brilliant. I've put a big long cushion it in and a ton of toys, and I leave the door open so dd2 crawls in and out and happily plays in it. Because she thinks of it as a little play area where she can choose to go by herself, she doesn't mind when I occasionally close the door and shut her in, if I need to do something upstairs. It's quite large so you have to have somewhere where you can put it, but it's worth reorganising your living room to fit it in, as somewhere where baby is safe and happy to play for a short time is worth its weight in gold!

We have one of these - you can get it in different sizes, we went for full-on 8 sides but we're currently just using 6 sides. The 6 sided version is still huge! But that's great as it's what I wanted, it gives DS plenty of room to crawl around, cruise and play but I still know he's not going to pull the TV/cables etc. You can fold it concertina-style by loosening/removing 2 screws apparently, though we've never done that as we always have it up! We put in toys, a big cushion and a big blanket and he loves it.

We have a travel cot as the main sleeping area, we used to put him in there to do something quickly but he hated it hence we were determined to find something very different from that.

The link was for the Lindam Safe and Secure Metal Playpen currently reduced at £69.99. It has a nice squashy mat on the floor so it is nice and comfy to play inside.

HooverFairy · 27/09/2013 20:46

Our travel cot is too small for DS now he is 10 months, we have baby den play pen - it's metal and can be put into different sizes and shapes. The gates can also be used as a fire guard and a room divider. It's a metal one with a squishy mat in the bottom, the bars are far enough apart for DS to see out clearly so it doesn't feel like he's been put in a box.

PoppyWearer · 27/09/2013 20:53

I would recommend the Baby Den/Baby Dan playpen.

You can even buy a tent canopy for it - check eBay if you can't find one new. And buy extra bits to expand it if needed.

Would anyone recommend the fabric lindam playpen over the metal one or vice versa?
