Constipation in toddler - three poo-less days......

I can't find a relevant thread and would be so grateful for advice, or shown where another relevant thread might be...
DS is newly toilet trained but has got anxious about poos - has always had incredibly healthy bowels and gone loads of times a day, but has not gone for three days now. I feel so awful for him, especially as I have given him bananas today thinking it would help and it is a big no no. He's had heaps of fluids and some lactulose and still nothing. I'm frightened of giving him a suppository and making the whole thing even more off-putting. Should I take him to the doc tomorrow?? Please help anyone??

Sorry, meant to say he is 3.2.

Are there any non-constipating fruits he really likes? I'd be inclined to give those. (e.g. blueberries, strawberries, grapes, cherries)

Does he seem uncomfortable?

I don't think the doc will be able to do anything, anyway.

It took my dd 15 months to poo in the toilet after she was out of nappies - she was terrified of the whole idea and would become hysterical and scream the place down if we even suggested using the toilet. In fact she would only ever poo in a nappy, always at the same time of day, and always in the same place (nowhere near the toilet!. Allowing her to have a nappy made her more relaxed about things, and prevented the constipation and pain issue. If he knows when he needs a poo maybe you would be happy to let him know that he can ask for a nappy for a poo if he wants one.

It helps to see training for wee and for poo as two separate processes - the fact that he is ready to wee in the toile doesn't automatically mean that he's ready to poo in the toilet. If he isn't emotionally ready then there's no point in forcing it. It only leads to stress for you and for him - and the more stressful things get, the less likely he is to want to use the toilet.

Prunes or prune juice are the best cure. Or syrup of figs.

Thanks, guys, for those suggestions. He is quite a big fruit eater and is very keen on berries. I will try prunes too if I can find them. Wonder whether suggesting the nappy might be a step back though, WWB, considering he is more your great big hulking boy who's just toilet trained, rather than a wee slip of a thing of 2! Not sure.
Thanks very much again.

You will find tins of prunes in the supermarket. They come in apple or pear jiuce and are very cheap. If he's not keen, they're good in rice pudding, or in porridge for breakfast. Or try a warm fruit salad, boil some blueberries in a little apple juice for a few mins, add chopped strawberries, grapes and a mashed banana. A novelty for him too.

Axolotl, dd was nearly 3 when we started to do the nappy for a poo thing - hardly a mere slip of a tot! She was relieved to be able to have a nappy because she was unhappy using the toilet, and I just thought that if your ds is getting anxious about using the toilet, it might be an option for him. I didn't see it as a step back for dd, just a way of taking the pressure off and making sure she didn't get hang-ups about pooing and so didn't get constipated - she would hang onto it for days otherwise, and make herself sore when she eventually pooed.

WWB, that's reassuring - maybe I'll try that if things don't look up, or, er....down, you might say
And Brambalina, thank you for that suggestion - sounds yummy as a matter of fact. Feeling quite inspired by a kids food special in the Observer today. Had some cooked bluberries in a recipe and I've never done that with them before. Maybe I'll bung in some prunes too, as you suggest.
thanks again.
