I've done my best not to let dd and ds see my phobia of wasps

However tonight ds got stung by a bee. It was hiding in the middle of his toys and he screamed the place down. His finger swelled up a bit and he was very sore for a while afterwards.

Dd asked lots of questions, why did the buzzy bee sting ds Mummy and I am worried she may now start to be scared of them. She is already a bit scared of flies for some strange reason.

Oh dear, julie - poor ds, hope he was OK afterwards?

The bee stung him because he was bigger than it, and it was frightened of him - true enough and might make her a bit more confident that they're not hostile? (I know wasps can be, but that's another matter.)

Does she mind ordinary flies or just bluebottles? I dislike ordinary flies - nasty dirty things! - but bluebottles make me duck and cringe and run for the flyspray - I don't think being scared of them is an abnormal reaction!

My ds is very scared of wasps and even tiny flies I can only assume he has picked it up from dp who feels the same way, even though we try not to let him see a reaction.

I think it is normal to be scared of bees etc. to some extent especially if one has stung you. Perhaps ds could look at pictures or books about bees - they are quite interesting creatures and also look sort of cute and fuzzy Maybe another adult could do this with him and even take him to look at a beehive or similar (I am assuming you would not be happy doing this yourself).

Oddly enough Franny, I don't have a problem with bees, just wasps, I am petrified of them.

Ds is fine now and is too young really to remember. I doubt he knows what caused the pain, fil squashed it very quickly (I was upstairs and just heard an almighty sobbing).

Dd is at an age though where she remebers things.

She is fine with butterflies (probably becasue they pretend to be butterflies at ballet!) but she does get a bit silly around both normal flies and bluebottles.

I just don;t want her to be like me. I am bound to be stung one day because I go in a flap when a wasp appears.

Hiya

I also am phobic and have avoided telling them- using avoidance, such as going to buy an ice cream 'oh look the queue is short' as the reptile house is nearby.

I have now sat ds1 and ds2 down and explained that Mummy is silly but.... they seemed to accept that well enough. I had to after a very big adder slithered in front of the car and I screamed and screamed

I'm terrified of wasps & bees too. Don't like anything that flies that much tbh especially crane flies . Always ducking & diving, it's pathetic . I have been stung a few times though. Just can't bear the buzzing . Any helpful hints would be gratefully received and not ones like, 'well it's perfectly obvious, you just stay still'. This, from my oh so helpful SIL (not Spacedonkey's sis lol) not! Thought it was highly amusing grrr. Wanted to take the mick out of her as she won't go on escalator's or over the millenium bridge but I'm better than that

I have the same thing julie but with spiders.

One dropped down on my neck the other day and I am still getting over it. It does get hard to swallow the scream but I have gone the whole "Leave the spiders alone, they don't like to be disturbed, too busy catching flies."

Dts have gone for that but they do still sometimes point one out. I just have to stop myself jumping and running away very fast.

ComeOVeneer · 25/06/2006 21:46

I'm one for the spiders too. Had a mini tarantula in the living room last week>. I managed to be brave enough to put a glass over it and it stayed there for 3 hours 'til DH got home then I made him walk to the end of the road to get rid of it. I know this won't help with the phobia, but you should consider getting one of those vaccum things to remove stings etc (they are really effective at reducing the pain and swelling). I'll see if I can do a link.

everyone always tells me the way i flap will only make the wasps more likely to sting. however after a 2 week holiday in the isle of wight, out of 10 of us 7 people got stung and i wasn't one of them!! [insert smug emoticon]
