Do you wash your dc's hair everyday?

DH decided to not wash Dd's hair on the days he gives her baths on the grounds that it's not good for her scalp to have her hair washed everyday. I'm not quite convinced. Just wondering how often do you wash your dc's hair and if it actually does any damage to wash it everyday!

Usually every day. They're in the bath and don't mind so it's easy to do. Doesn't seem to be doing them any harm and I love sniffing their clean heads whilst doing bedtime stories

Afaik, soap/shampoo isn't good, it strips the natural oils.
Use it when needed not just for the sake of.
Agree with pp, just water will get rid of a lot of ordinary daily dirt.
I wash my dcs' hair once a week. When it looks dirty, I'll do it more.

My poor dd has inherited crazy Afro/Eastern European/Irish hair from me and crazy thick French hair from exP so it's quite fly away anyway, think I've been washing it out of habit as part of routine. Going to skip it tomorrow and see how we go.

Every other day both dc. Dd's is very long and in plaits so could probably go longer but I myself like my hair when it's freshly washed so I like hers to be done too.

mamij · 18/09/2013 23:22

DDs (almost 2 year old and almost 4 year old) have had their hair washed daily from birth. A bath once or twice a week, and the rest of the days in the shower with me. Would hair wash each time.

Norfolknway · 18/09/2013 23:28

Usually twice a week for my DD 2.3

pokesandprodsforthelasttime · 18/09/2013 23:31

Twice a week. More when she was a baby / toddler due to general muck & food in her hair.

breatheslowly · 18/09/2013 23:44

Once or twice a week - when it begins to look a bit skanky.

HPsauceonbaconbuttiesmmm · 19/09/2013 09:12

Once a week unless obviously mucky.

MoneyMug · 19/09/2013 09:15

2 year old here. Once or twice a week.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 19/09/2013 09:18

Have to wash DD (6.11)'s hair every day as it is very oily and she gets spots on her forehead already if I don't

MoneyMug · 19/09/2013 09:18

I only use shampoo on her hair once every few weeks.

MrsOakenshield · 19/09/2013 09:21

once a week (she's 3), always done that. She gets it pretty wet every day in the bath anyway, and I have a tangle teezer and try to brush it most days - it's curly and gets a bit tangly and matted. She hates having it washed, but I wouldn't do it more even if she loved it, there's no reason unless your child has greasy hair and I don't see how a toddler can. All soaps/shampoos strip the natural oils from hair and skin, it just seems silly to do this on purely cosmetic grounds to a small child.

peacefuleasyfeeling · 19/09/2013 09:23

DD1 (3y): Shallow bath every day, hair gets washed once a week.
DD2 (11 wks): about three times so far, and not with soap or shampoo.

sparkle12mar08 · 19/09/2013 09:28

Hair twice a week here too. Sunday night before the school week, and Weds night - halfway through the week and perfect timing as is after football club where they get sweaty and dirty. We do a pits and bits shower every morning, and hands and faces every night. Given that both are prone to eczema, this is perfectly sufficient according to the doctor and my instinct.

C4ro · 19/09/2013 09:52

Once a week or maximum twice but for a long time before the summer it was much less than that!
DD is 3.1 and HATES having her hair washed. My friend has a 4.5 year old and they were in the bath together this summer, her DD doesn't mind at all; happy to have buckets of water dumped on her hair. My DD is suggestible and anything "like big girls do" is guaranteed to work! Now she will just about manage the hair wash without it needing 2 grown-ups with advanced wrestling skills and earplugs...

cory · 20/09/2013 07:50

Twice a week unless they were actually sick over it. Washing hair too often just makes it oilier as the body has to work harder to produce protective oils

lolalotta · 20/09/2013 10:53

I give me DD ( 3.9) a wash and a blow dry once a week. Grin
Her hair doesn't appear to need washing more than this, unless she gets toast hands in it. Wink

Thurlow · 20/09/2013 14:33

Oh, this is making me feel better! Wash 19mo's hair twice a week and wasn't sure if that was enough, but it obviously is!

sarahtigh · 21/09/2013 09:57

DD almost 4; once a week at home and once after swimming ( I take shampoo) it is not good for young children to have hair washed with shampoo every day, however if just wet from bath i guess that's fine

your DH is right

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 21/09/2013 10:07

Am wishing DD didn't need daily hair washing now as she has cut her chin and I need to keep it dry for a week...dry shampoo is my friend now

Hmm I wonder what that was

Sparrow8 · 21/09/2013 10:53

My dd had very mild eczema as a baby and I was told by my doctor to only wash her hair once a week. He said the more you wash it, the more you will need to wash it. When I had ds only washed hair once a week and we still do the same now they are 7 and 10.
