...to treat reflux.

My 11 wk old DS has been suffering from reflux which we've been managing using Gaviscon and Infacol (for the wind the Gaviscon created) successfully until recently when we've noticed signs of the reflux coming back despite the Gaviscon Sad sure enough, yesterday and today proved our worries correct Sad Sad

We're going back to the Doctor's tomorrow, but I'm not keen on chopping and changing milks or giving him stronger meds if we can help it...A friend of mine suggested I consider osteopathy as it was so successful for her LO's colic and I'd like to give it a go but am obviously concerned about the cost.

So I'm wondering if you have had any experiences of cranial osteopathy for treating reflux? Any idea on how many sessions we might need if we were to go ahead? Am hoping for both positive and negative feedback for a balanced view!

Thanks everyone Smile

My CO doesn't treat reflux - told me to get medicine for LO. Tbh I'm skeptical about CO despite having paid for 5 sessions!

I have found it very useful for my 16wk dd. She saw a fantastic guy (recommended by the GP, Hv and friend) who has helped make her more floppy and relaxed. Don't get me wrong, it is expensive and she is still a nightmare but it would be so much worse without. The cranial osteo noticed a hiatus hernia (slightly out of area!) that the consultant and GP missed. The biggest difference was at the start when she was about 6 weeks, all she could do was scream and after one treatment she was so much happier. There is a limit to how much they can do but if you have the money then give it a go. I would rather it than more drugs (although we have tried them all!). I went with the idea that it has to be worth a shot!

On a reflux note, we found growth spurt time the worst, it caused a huge flare up every time but it does calm down eventually.

I don't know whether the one that has been recommended will treat reflux yet, am going to call tomorrow. I went to a chiropractor for SPD and they treat it there so will go there if need be. .

If it was just up to me I'd just give it a go, but OH is v skeptical and would prefer to try stuff we can get for free on prescription first!

Vomiting, when did your LO grow out of it? DS' s just seems to be getting worse tbh Sad

As an aside I read when my LO was put on Gaviscon that you shouldn't use it with Infacol as they work against each other. Google Gaviscon and Infacol.

I thought DS may have had reflux but wasn't sure took him to CO who said he was constipated high up from birth apparently the bowels don't kick in as well after a section as the baby hasn't travelled down the birth canal..could all be blah blah but.. Had 3 sessions where she massaged his tummy. He would cry when she did it but after would do a huge poo and be a lot more settled for a couple of days!

If your going to try it give it at least 3 goes.

the two cranial osteos I took ds to when he was little told you pretty quick whether they could help.

First improved but it was still v. bad. osteo stopped the sessions after three.

ultimately went back to lady who had treated me when little. within three it was stopped. BUT has needed top ups every 4-12 weeks.

I would say assume you are in for 3 sessions. if you don't see improvement in three your wasting your money on more. but they should tell you that anyway.

also, the night after the osteo was often very very bad. then after you would see the improvement

Not yet, she is 4 months now and still going strong! My sons reflux peaked at the 4 month growth spurt so I am desperately hoping that it gets easier now. We have reached the end of the line on medication, there is nothing left to try her on, no higher doses to give, so are looking at weaning to make her more comfortable now. I really hope she takes to it, ds had an oral aversion for everything (giving medications was a nightmare).

If you go to the GP asking for more medication you must ask to see a paediatrician, they will likely give you ranitidine. We have found that GPs that arent paediatricians won't prescribe anything over Gaviscon. Failing that try going to a&e! When ds wouldn't stop crying they were fantastic.

Good luck!
