why do some babies puke so much?

I don't think my baby has reflux, as doesn't cry, seem uncomfortable and is putting on weight, she just seems to be a baby that pukes alot, needs to wear a bib and goes through plenty of outfits.
Why do they do this? It's not been from the start - I'd say from about 9 weeks onwards and she's now 12 weeks.
Is her tummy too small for the milk she takes in? Sometimes it's straightaway after feed which makes me think that. Other times it's later on and the puke is more watery with lumps in it rather than milky looking.
Is she likely to grow out of it soon, or do I invest in a better washing machine and more clothes because this can continue for ages?
Any ideas and also tips on how to tackle it? I find that bibs help but she still ends up with a very wet neck and clothes because it dribbles down her neck and back and misses the majority of the bib on her front when she's down for her sleeps and nappy changes.

Ps. We've moved to sleeping bags and I'd love to protect those as they are more expensive than clothes and take an age to dry now the weather has turned.

CMP allergy?

SlowlySlowlySlowly · 08/09/2013 13:29

DD was like this. A happy puker. Didn't seem to bother her, put on weight, no signs of distress but was such a sicky baby. The HV said some babies are just like this. For us, it didn't really stop until she was more upright and toddling I'm afraid. Not to say this will be the same for you.

I tried to keep her fairly upright after feeds and try not to jiggle her about too much. This helped a bit but it just took time really.

DS was a massive puker, he was allergic to milk amongst other things. He was quite an unsettled baby though.

stitchinline · 08/09/2013 14:31

I had a happy puker too, didn't stop for until she was about one. I say invest in a good washing machine as that is all that saved me, constantly had a soak bucket on the go. I used lots of bibs and muslins.

AllabouttheE · 08/09/2013 14:45

Dd puker too. Didn't stop till she walked at 14 months. And she has cows milk protein allergy too.

I was a puker and my niece was and we don't have CMP allergy.

It's a weak stomach valve.

Fleece backed bibs, lots of mussies and washing washing washing.

I like that phrase - a happy puker!
She's still breastfed so not giving her formula, but does that not make a difference - will she be getting the CMP indirectly anyway through me?
I might reduce my intake and see if it helps - although lately i've had a huge craving for porridge! Will need to find some other warm, comforting and calorie rich food for my breakfast/lunch...
But i did expect it to be a phase - a bit gutted that it may turn out to be quite a long one though - might need to get some more bibs!!!

Yes she will still be getting cmp through you unless you cut it out from your diet. But make sure you are still getting your calcium!

My DS has a cmp allergy and reflux and is on medication.

Bloob · 08/09/2013 21:19

Ds was like this. And tbh is a bit pukey now at 14 months. If he has a big bf he will be a bit sick after. When he was tiny I never bothered with bibs, he was so violently sick it wouldn't have made the slightest difference! I never figured it out either.

Though he does have a dairy allergy, only diagnosed after weaning, so it could have been that. I always thought it was just because he was a piggy! It got better and better, reduced from 8 times a day to once a day to once a week etc..

He was also a happy puker Grin

SilverApples · 08/09/2013 21:23

I have no idea, neither of mine threw up when they were babies. First time they were sick, DD was almost four and DS was three.
I'm not telling you this as a smug parent thing, just that I have no idea why they didn't, and I'd put money on parents of other babies who never vomit as being equally clueless.
So don't let anyone make you feel otherwise. It's just luck IMO.

brettgirl2 · 08/09/2013 21:30

I had one that puked and one that didn't. No idea but dd was happy and putting on weight so it just caused washing. She seemed to puke more on days she was less hungry so had eaten less Confused makes no sense to me at all.

SucksFake · 08/09/2013 21:31

I also had a happy puker! He was also breastfed, and often used to fill my bra cup with vomit straight after feeding. Boak. Half the load in our wash used to be bibs/muslins.

I'm fairly sure it was actually reflux even though he wasn't in pain, and was a porker. Can be 'silent'.

It settled gradually once he started on solids. Is 14mo now, and hasn't puked in ages.

Good luck! Hopefully it won't last too long, and as long as your DD is happy and thriving the only worry is keeping up with the washing!

trixymalixy · 08/09/2013 22:09

Ugh, I remember well having my bra filled with baby vomit! Thang god I'm past that.

Try oatly milk on your porridge I can barely taste the difference when I put it on cereal. Not do great in tea though...

Yes CMP can pass through your breast milk.

AllabouttheE · 08/09/2013 22:13

Yes to Oatly milk, blue one has calcium. Doesn't taste any different in porridge.

Cut milk out for a fortnight, see if makes difference. It is in all processed food tho so if you are a good cook, it's easy.

Can you switch to coffee ? There is an Oatly cream which works ok in coffee.
Else black tea. Or mint tea. Or no tea!

AllabouttheE · 08/09/2013 22:14

Oh and I cook with Blue Oatly exactly as you would with milk. All tastes perfectly normal.
