Baby proofing open plan living room kitchen?

I have been putting this off for a while but I feel like I need to just get it done now but no idea where to start.

In our house the main living space is all on one floor with stairs leading up to bedrooms and down to front door and laundry room. The stairs have metal railings on one side, so nothing to screw a stair gate into. I though about getting one of those extra wide gates to block off the area in front of the stairs but since it is kind of an "O" shape that would only block it off from one direction, if that makes sense?

Any suggestion or recommendations for gates would be greatly appreciated.

Pressure fit stairgate?

If not then cable ties?

SusuwatariToes · 06/09/2013 00:57

Pressure fit wouldn't work because of the way the "up" stairs are not at the same width as the railings.

Agh this is really hard to explain, I'll see if I can put a picture on my profile.

I thought pressure mounted weren't recommended for stairs anyway?

Ok, there should be a picture on my profile now.
Thanks for the link.

I'm also concerned that an ineffective gate is worse than no gate at all as he is likely to try and pull himself up on it then if it gives out he's got further to fall.

Can't see your profile. You need to make it public. I have no idea how that is done.

SusuwatariToes · 06/09/2013 02:20

Can you see it now?

I can. Don't have any suggestions though as the newel post does look a bit too thin for a pressure fit. Cable ties might be a solution but I'm not confident.

On the bright side in an open plan room it should be easier to keep an eye on your DC!

Haha, thanks! For the meantime I have created a furniture wall. It means we are only using 2/3 of the living room space now but oh well!

Look into the lindam fabric play pen that works as workable divider. you could attach it to the wall at the bottom then make an L shape to that other wall at the side?

motownmover · 06/09/2013 15:35

I have open plan everywhere and what I do is teach my babies to go down stairs backyard so they crawl down stairs backyards and I've never had an accident.

They do bumped down on their tummies feet first and love - I have carpeted stairs - no one who comes over can quite believe it.

But I have never needed stairgates because of it!

www.lindam.com/product/play-pens/safety/safe-and-secure-soft-play-pen--grey.html

we used this to 'wrap around' our fireplace and you can break it down and use it twice if that makes sense? say use three panels to protect the bottom of stairs and use the remainder somewhere else? You can order more fittings from Lindam pretty cheap

SusuwatariToes · 06/09/2013 16:47

Thanks Kato, I think something like that is probably going to be my best option.

That sounds sensible Motown. I don't think that would work for us though. The "down" stairs are wooden and the bottom floor is tiled, also the bottom half of them are not enclosed so I would be scared of him falling off the side! Just too many extra dangers I think.
