Temp and calpol taking ages?

Hello,

My two year old dd had a temp earlier of 39.1, been under the weather yesterday but seems ok in herself. However when I gave her calpol it has taken two hours for her temp to come down to 38 is this normal for calpol it's usually quicker than this. Also if I try calprofen can she have that in a couple hours, so four hours after the calpol to see if that works if still raised temp? Thanks x

You can run calpol and iboprufen alongside each other so give one, and then 2-3 hrs after give the other and then 2-3 hours after that give the first again if still necessary. Several GPs have told me that it is perfectly OK to do this.

What Seeline said. If you don't see a fairly quick reduction in temp with Calpol, try Nurofen (or another ibuprofen equivalent that does not contain paracetamol). DS had a very high temp recently, approaching 40. He didn't respond to Calpol so we gave him Nurofen about an hour later. However on that occasion we also took him to hospital on NHS Direct's advice. He was ok btw - they just thought better to be safe. They put a fan on him, stripped him completely and gave him more meds and when his temp came down they sent him home.

Thanks I've given her calprofen so i'll see what that does, she's drinking, eating and playful still when not looking sorry for herself so I'll just be keeping an eye on her today x

I took my 20 month old DS to A&E with an uncontrollable high temp topping 40 recently. They administer calpol quantities based on the child's weight rather than the age as directed on the box. It turns out that as my DS is big for his age he was allowed more calpol than we were giving as we were following the dosage instructions on the box. They topped up the dose and pretty quickly his temp came down. May be worth looking into just incase the dose isn't enough.

I also have found Calprofen to be more effective at bringing down his temperatures on the whole. The paediatrician at A&E also said from her experience she has found ibuprofen to be more effective.
