Exhausting them in the day = an earlier bedtime. Does it work?

DD (3.5) is taking ages to go to sleep at night and is getting more and more tired. She is never asleep before 9 and up about 7 so she's just not getting enough sleep. We've tried various things but now I'm wondering about trying to really wear her out during the day to see if that helps.

We're usually pretty active eg today we went to the park this morning and then she played in the garden this afternoon running around with DH but maybe I need to step it up a gear.

I'm pretty knackered at the moment so don't really want to expend precious energy if it won't get results! Anyone had sucess with exhausting their kids and getting an earlier bedtime?

IME with our DCs it takes a few days, so for example, maybe 3 days of running them ragged and then they will sleep for 12 hours solid but that seems to recharge their batteries ready for the next onslaught. Sorry.

My DC1 is 5yo and is like your DC, OP. I have tried wearing her out many times but only in extreme cases has it worked, and she has flopped at 6pm.

Today, I thought I had exhausted her. It was still 9pm before she fell asleep. She will still be up before 7am tomorrow and she will still be tired tomorrow.

Will take a few days to "break" them.

Mine was doing 8.30pm to 5.30 -6am - usually with a bed wetting for good measure and she's three and a half.

What seemed to work was walking to and from nursery, afternoon romp in the park and then bringing dinner forward half an hour to 5.30, bath and bed at 7pm bedtime story of harry potter (me droning helps i think Wink)and she is zonking out after 10 mins,

It seems to have confused her body clock for now and I sleep till 7am now Grin

In case that sounds smug- I fully expect to hear " muuummyyyyy I've done a weeeeeeeee " at around 4am this morning - because I've got work tomorrow and karma always kicks my arse!

Glad it's not just me! She still wears a pull up night. Need to steel myself for the endless accidents...

No, but they do seem to sleep longer after a tiring day.
