Anyone else got a late walker?

Ds is 16 and a half months and STILL not walking. He weighs a tonne and is driving me mad! Dd was 15 months and she seemed late then! He is cruising around and if you stand him up and let go he can stand on his own for a few seconds but he WILL NOT walk. I'm sure he's strong enough. Grrrrrrrrr Wink

Hiya -my son was 18 months - don't worry too much - he was heavy too - 10lb 9oz born - and i think it was his weight holding him back. hth. xx

yes DS is 17 mths, loves to walk if holding onto finger, but will not consider it otherwise
on the upside at least when they're late walkers you don't have to stoop massively to offer a finger
I am not enjoying the frustration he's obviously feeling ATM -- he's got a real sense of how near he is, and it's winding him up

Maddiebean, my ds showed no interest in walking whatsoever. He would stand, cruise etc.

One day, aged 17 months, he just got up and walked across the room. He didn't even seem to realise what he was doing - and I was so amazed I didn't say anything! He didn't attempt this again for another 2 days, but a week later he was walking steadiy all the time.

DD1 took forever.

And now, at five, she walks a mile most days, as I smugly tell all those people in my antenatal group who were showing off about their running 11 month olds.

geogteach · 19/06/2006 16:47

DS2 has been walking about 4 weeks he is 20 months and just got out of the pushchair and walked across the play ground. It was frustrating before but he was obviously just biding his time, he is much more confident and less clingey now but I suspect his brother and sister wish he was back in the buggy!

maddiebean · 19/06/2006 16:59

He's just crawled(ish) past with his feet on the ground and bottie in the air...ah well, each to their own I suppose. He just seems so close but also a million miles away. Glad to hear he's not alone though Grin

Oh yes - we're walking late here too. Ds is 18 months old and while he's crawling, cruising, crawling/scooting up and down stairs, and climbing all over - he's even faster than most of his little friends who are walking. However, he seems like he lacks the confidence to take that first step. I think he has the strength as well which is so frustrating! I am going to request a physio evaluation from the GP soon as I'm wondering if there's something I can do to help him...

sunnydelight · 20/06/2006 12:47

DS1 walked at 16 months, DS2 at 18 months and DD at 17 months. They were all very efficient crawlers - especially DS2 - so I don't think they saw the point! Relax and enjoy - when they start walking it's not long before they start running Grin

LucyJones · 20/06/2006 12:48

ds didn't walk til 21 months so you may have a while to wait yet i'm afriad....

maddiebean · 20/06/2006 13:05

ARGH...I didn't want to hear that Lucy Wink!!!
jenweber630 your lo sounds exactly the same as ds, he's much quicker that dd was at crawling and can climb onto the sofa, up the stairs etc etc, I just don't think he sees the point in walking!

My daughter was 17months and light as a feather , definitely noty her weight holding her back. Reckon she was wary of being knocked over by her 3yo brother and reckoned it was safer on the floor. Plus she crawled superfast so she didnt have much motivation to crawl. They all just get there in their own time.

Xavielli · 07/07/2006 23:07

You have my deepest sympathies! Ds was 15 months and that felt sooo late when all the 11 month olds were running around him. Little pickle also chose to start walking the Day DD was born... so I missed the whole thing entirely!

SofiaAmes · 08/07/2006 08:44

My dd didn't walk until 19 months. She was speaking in full sentences at 12 months though. She was quite chubby until she started walking and now she is skinny as can be.
Once dd did start walking she was completelly steady and never ever fell down. Ds started at 12 months, but was wobbly and falling down for ages after that.

jalopy · 08/07/2006 10:14

18 months. It was a tedious process

neena28 · 08/07/2006 10:17

My ds (now 5 years) didn't walk until he was 19 months old. Just didn't seem to want to bother and could crawl really fast. Wasn't big or small.

He just upped and started walking one day, within a week was running and no-one would have ever known that he hadn't been walking for 6 months like his friends!

He'll be fine, enjoy what he can do rather than wish his life away! Easier said than done though if he's heavy!!

neena28 · 08/07/2006 10:18

DD was one yesterday and won't crawl either so we're obviously a late mobile family. Like another poster my two were/are both very good verbally and extremely good at anything that is fiddly and precise. They all seem to have different skills at different times!
