Should I now start bathing baby with soap stuff?

DD is now one but I have only ever used water to clean her in the bath. I know some people use soap from early on but hv and nurses said no need to do that -when she was born.
Anyway shall I start using a bath wash of some start now and what do you recommend?
Want something as unchemical as poss :-)

You can if you want, but you don't have to.

My son, who is four, only gets bathed in soap about once a week, the rest of the time in bath oil from the GP.

When I do bath him in soap I use very gentle stuff I can only find at Boots, so I can't tell you what it is as the site is offline and it's upstairs. I'll try to post when I go up in a minute!

valiumredhead · 31/08/2013 22:04

I wouldn't and definitely nothing by Johnsons.

LoganMummy · 31/08/2013 22:05

What makes you say nothing by Johnson's?

What's wrong with Johnsons?

Tee2072 · 31/08/2013 22:08

Johnson's is very drying and full of SLS.

I use Mini Naked. Only thing that doesn't make my son's eczema flare.

dizzy77 · 31/08/2013 22:12

Soap became more necessary when DS1 (2.3) started playing in dirt etc, though I don't bathe him that often, strip wash most if the time with a couple of baths a week.

though it hasn't bothered DS1, DS2 does react to Johnsons and Cousins baby soap, whilst I love the smell the perfume does seem to react with him. Using Simple for bathing after poo-plosions at the moment but going to experiment with supermarket brands.

valiumredhead · 31/08/2013 22:14

Its very harsh and drying and have seen kids have terrible reactions to it.

Somethingpink · 31/08/2013 22:16

I would personally say yes. So many people are against Johnstone on my imo and I don't understand it. I have never ever seen or heard of anything bad happening to a child because of the use of their products. Bad skin runs in my family and my dc and nieces and nephews have all been fine using it Smile

LoganMummy · 31/08/2013 22:17

Didn't know that, thanks. Any suggestions of what to use instead?

lola88 · 31/08/2013 22:18

I bath Ds is water every night and wash with simple soap and shampoo twice a week. I never believed the Johnstons is bad stuff but DS has sensitive skin and can't go near it though it never bothered DN at all.

PoppyWearer · 31/08/2013 22:19

I've had both GPs and people who work for toiletries companies tell me that Johnson's is too drying. My DCs have eczema and we can't go near the stuff.

We use Oilatum.

breatheslowly · 31/08/2013 22:21

DD is nearly 3 and doesn't have anything except shampoo and conditioner (sulphate free) about once a week. We currently use www.childsfarm.com/ shampoo and conditioner. She does have baths/showers more frequently and her hair is rinsed through each time but not washed each time. She also uses handwash when she washes her hands, so she does have some contact with other wash stuff, but not much.

We have gone down this route because DH has bad eczema and we wanted to use as few products on DD's skin in the first few years to minimise the risk of her developing it too as there is a theory that mucking up the natural oils in skin causes eczema. DD doesn't have eczema, but obviously we will never know if not using products on her skin has made any difference.

goodasitgets · 31/08/2013 22:23

This stuff is nice. I got some as it was on sale in boots
www.miamoo.co.uk

Meglet · 31/08/2013 22:24

Blimey. Mine are 6 and 5 and I've never used soap on them, they sometimes get eczema so I'm extra cautious. They've had the odd dab of shower gel in the last couple of years but that's it. They usually shower, if they're flithy a good soak in a plain water bath gets the muck off them.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 31/08/2013 22:26

Well according to one thread on here tonight soap doesn't get rid of poo, only Flash does - so perhaps you should start using that!

Mine are 5 and 2 and we use E45 bath stuff and a bit of Dermol to wash any extra grubby bits.

PeazlyPops · 31/08/2013 22:26

Weleda is very gentle.

Johnsons is very drying. I bought some when I was pregnant as it was very cheap for a big re-usable box of stuff, but didnt use on DS in the end. I didn't want it to go to waste and so used it myself, and it gave me loads of dry, scaly patches on my skin. I have normal skin and don't usually react to anything.

valiumredhead · 31/08/2013 22:46

Ds uses a minute amount of infaderm on a sponge-still uses it and he's 12Grin he has sensitive skin and he doesn't react to it. When he was little I just used it for his hands and feet and rinsed off, do he wasn't soaking in it in the bath.

ceeveebee · 31/08/2013 22:53

We use aqueous cream, on prescription as DS has ezcema, but it can be bought over the counter too.

GoingUpInTheWorld · 31/08/2013 22:59

Im [shocked] at this thread with people saying they hardly ever use soap on their children.

Dd is 10 months, i use pears soap on her, she has a bath every morning, always has done. Never had any skin problems.

I think i ve had a sheltered life....

GoingUpInTheWorld · 31/08/2013 22:59

That should be Shock

breatheslowly · 31/08/2013 23:11

I'd avoid aqueous cream due to the SLS content and the advice from www.eczema.org/aqeous.

GoingUpInTheWorld - if your DD doesn't have any problem with soap and you don't have allergies/skin problems then by all means use soap on her.

Willow33 · 31/08/2013 23:12

Has anyone used the Naked stuff?
So a gd idea would be to start using something once or twice a week?
My hv also said not to use Johnsons...

My DD had mild eczema - now 6 and we use stuff in the bath - oilatum on prescription but lately E45 or Sanex junior because it makes bubbles but I would go back to oilatum for flares...
I had never used soap on anywhere but her hands, I do use shampoo but a mild one . (However posted a week or so ago because noticed DD2 was smelling of BO! - have used soap on her armpits a couple of times - watching out for a flare and seeing if we need a visit to nurse to check for a hormone thing her sister got at a similar age)

I also only give her a bath twice a week - as DD1 had the same skin problems and stopping bathing her every night (even with Oilatum followed by smothering her in aveeno/diprobase/doublebase) led to a massive improvement in her skin.

DD1(12) seems to have outgrown her problems - now uses soap on her armpits and face/facial wash - and her skin has been fine.

breatheslowly · 31/08/2013 23:45

Willow - unless your DD smells or has marks of something that won't come off there is no reason to start using anything.

K8Middleton · 31/08/2013 23:48

I don't use soap or shampoo on either of mine. They get a hair rinse every so often and sometimes I put a little Aveeno in the bath water. Ds likes to tip any bubbles out in one go so I stopped buying them. He seems fine and not very dirty. Ds washes his hands and face frequently.

I bathe them a max of every couple of days or as infrequently as once a week depending what they've been doing. I'd like Ds(4) to wash more often.
