One year old ds and cows milk

DS is going to one year old in a few weeks (that's gone quick!Grin ). I know he can start having cows milk as a drink at the time. I've been told that to get him used to it, I can mix part formula, part cows milk.

Once he is used to it, is that it for formula? Can I just replace his formula feeds with cows milk? Tia.

I didnt mix them as my 2 never seemed to notice a difference. I did it one feed at a time e.g. morning feed as cows milk and evening one as formula. After a week or so I changed the evening one to cows milk as well. After that, no more formula.

Thanks. It will seem strange to stop it, but I'm looking forward to not having to make bottles up any more Smile

Yep from 12 months they just need 350ml of full fat cow's milk a day.

Yep toddler milk is a scam. But I'm surprised when this survey came out how many parents are giving toddler milk instead of good old cow's milk!

I breastfed my son but when DS1 was a year old I just gave him a cup of 'straight' cows milk and he took it fine - I didn't need to dilute it with breastmilk to get him used to it.

I did discover that he didn't really like it warm though and when I gave him cold milk from the fridge he preferred that. I bfed him for another year after that, but he'd happily take cows milk in a cup even when he was getting bmilk from me.

DD1 would not drink cow's milk on its own at first, so we mixed it with formula and gradually reduced the amount until we were able to stop formula entirely.

You don't even need to give cows milk as a drink at all, just the right amount of calcium which can be made up with milk in cereal, cheese, yoghurt, bread etc.

Thanks Giraffe, I didn't know that. Grin

Eletheomel DD was bf too, and would also take cow's milk from a cup fridge cold on first try. I've heard ff fed babies are a bit different, in that they are more likely to need to be weaned onto cow's milk and also prefer it in a bottle. At least with my DD, she sees getting cow's milk in a cup as being a big girl. With ff babies, I think they are already used to holding their own bottle and drinking it, not having to be stuck to mum, iyswim.

I started giving DS it during the day then after a few weeks at night he didn't notice, I also gave him follow on milk when it was very hot and he was teething because he hadn't eaten for days he didn't notice and didn't notice the switch back either.
