iPad for Christmas for 6 & 7 yr old...

My lovely DH thinks this is a great idea, I on the other hand am against. We have an iPad in our home with DC have 15/30mins at a time on it, which is more than enough play time on it. ( I do allow more time if we're looking up something educational) I don't feel they need one each, much prefer to see them playing in the garden.

So would you let Santa bring your 6 & 7 yr old an ipad for Christmas ?

No-far too young. Ideal as it is.

Tee2072 · 25/08/2013 14:52

No way. I don't even have an iPad. Too easily broken for such young people.

MortifiedAdams · 25/08/2013 14:56

Nope. Too young imo.

I have 7 and 9 year olds (will be 8 and 10 by Christmas). I have an ipad which both of them use. But no way would I get them one each - for one thing the cost would be too much and also I like the fact it is ultimately mine which makes policing it easier. I'm sure they will get tablets at some point but not yet.

3peasinapod · 25/08/2013 15:41

Ill be showing this to DH, it is way to young and when its their own ipad policing it would be impossible. Another valid reason why they should NOT have one.

Nope. Morally - if it's yours you can call the shots.

solarbright · 25/08/2013 15:47

No, wouldn't do it. Frankly I wouldn't let them have any sort of electronic/computer games of their own before they can read securely. You need to keep policing their time on it, so don't let them have their own!

Sirzy · 25/08/2013 15:48

They already have access to one seems a waste of money to buy another two

3peasinapod · 25/08/2013 16:03

Both are good readers love the library and I do encourage learning on iPads as i feel its the way things are going. So as it is IMHO it will be a long long time before I give in to both having iPads. DH will see sense in the end. He will have no choice Wink

Plus dc4 is due in december so the though of dc in another room and me not being able to watch 100% will not do at all.. Grin

If they like to read, a basic Kindle may be a good gift?

picnicbasketcase · 25/08/2013 16:21

A compromise might be a Kindle Fire? Still a tablet, good for reading on, but about £130 instead of £400+

3peasinapod · 25/08/2013 18:32

My MIL has one i may do a test run and see how that goes. Smile My eldest may like that idea and she is a book worm. It may encourage dd2 to read more, currently reads with me which is ok as I enjoy it.

I want Santa's gifts to be fun and worthwhile this year, not tossed in a corner only to be given away as no one plays with them... Hmm

The only thing with the Kindle Fire is that the choice of games/apps is much much smaller tha Apple or Android - your dcs may well still need to use your Ipad mainly to access the apos they like.

I'd get them an iPod touch each instead. No arguing over games, their own films and music and photos. Car journeys easySmile

Best things my dcs have ever got.

HappyMummyOfOne · 25/08/2013 21:21

Android tablets can be bought for around £70, can run kindle app and can be blocked for facebook etc. For young children they are so much better and cheaper if damaged.

3peasinapod · 25/08/2013 23:30

We have settled on a kindle for dd1 and dd2 will have to wait a while. I will see if she gets into dd1 kindle first.
DH has agreed that maybe they are to young... Grin So we will carry on as is and introduce a kindle and see how that goes. DD 2 can get very attached to iPad as it is, so she really needs limits and watched on the iPad.
Back garden is all we ever got!!! Lol

You can get child friendly pre loaded tablets that have no Internet access. Might be worth getting one of those?

HystericalParoxysm · 26/08/2013 00:30

Well, my kids have one and they are aged 3 to 8. You can have excellent control over the settings so they have no Internet access without my help. They are a bit over it tbh, the novelty does wear off Smile
