My four year old has a throat inf. and has just started antibiotics (although dr. Originally thought she didn't need them. She has been complaining if stomach pain and hasn't eaten for 2 days. I can't get her to eat or take soup. She's listless and weak. We are due to go on holiday tomorrow.
How do I get her to eat? And would it be unwise to go away? Parenting is hard and sometimes I feel like a complete novice. Feel so out of my depth when she's in pain and I can't help her.

oh no, the poor little thing Sad

when DD is poorly (she gets throat infections frequently) i relax all food 'rules' so as long as she is eating something, that's ok

ice cream with a digestive biscuit

ice pops

cereal

toast with favourite spread or dipped in soft boiled egg

our GP advised us that hard/scratchy food will help the infection heal faster as too much soft/milky stuff will coat the back of the throat and make it more gunky

dose her up with paracetamol and ibroprofen syrup to make her feel more comfortable

where are you holidaying?

Thanks so much. At the moment I can't get anything into her. Difficult to get water into her too! She won't take soup, bread, apple, digestives or joghurts. Does your DD get stomach pain? We're supposed to be going to Grance. Bit worried although though I know they go up and down quite quickly.

DD does get stomach pain, but then again she has ASD (autism) so pain is often misread by her Confused

have you tried just giving your DD an ice lolly or a bowl of ice cream and leaving the room, it's amazing what they have to do when it starts to melt Wink

My dd was put on antibiotics for a throat infection and they gave her sickness and diorhhea so I went back to the doctors and they said the tablets were probably disagreeing with her and the infection had cleared up anyway so she came off them and the next day she started picking up. The main thing is that she gets fluids inside her to keep her from getting dehydrated. If she is listless and has a dry mouth and isn't urinating much or her urine is dark yellow then she may be dehydrated. I would definitely get her looked at by a doctor again to see if she still needs to be on the antibiotics and whether she's dehydrated - get an emergency weekend appointment if you can. You need someone to see her and give you proper medical advice. Don't worry we all feel out of our depth with things like this - that's what doctors are there for. Just keep up her fluid intake - a little and often is the key. Sending you hugs - she will be ok but probably not well enough to travel right now xxx

She gave up on the ice lolly but will try leaving the room.
Thanks so much.

Poor thing. It's really good to know I'm not alone. You feel vulnerable as a parent when things go wrong or they are in a lot of pain. Your poor DD. antibiotics are hard on the stomach.

ocean the stomach pain might be due to her glands being inflamed in her stomach in response to the throat infection. If this is the case, then once the antibiotics start to work, the stomach pain will ease too.

I know how hard it is when they are ill - you feel so helpless. If it is a bacterial infection, the antibiotics will work really quickly - you will be astonished how fast she picks up, literally a day or two.

In the meantime, try and get her to take as much fluid as possible - even if it just a sip. Do you have a straw to make it a bit more interesting? Or a special cup that you don't normally let her have? Also keep up with calpol which is gentler on the stomach than ibuprofen.

If you are worried then call the out of hours service on your usual GP phone number, that is what they are for. They were really helpful when I phoned about DD.

Good luck - hope she feels better soon, it is horrible when they are ill.

I wouldn't worry about food as long as she keeps drinking. My DD has stopped.eating.for well over a week before and GP wasnt worried

twistyfeet · 24/08/2013 19:52

antibiotics can give you tummy pain and make you feel sick. dd always projectile vomits on them (she now has them IV only) so she probably feels ill which is why she isnt eating. A few days without food is ok but try and get her to drink. Anything.

mrscog · 24/08/2013 21:35

I find activia yoghurts really soothe the stomach pain associated with antibiotics. Yoghurt also contains quite a lot of water and so counts as hydration.

My son had an abscess last year and the only things I could get him to eat were custard and jelly in those little pots, maybe worth a try? No other advice sorry.

funnymummy2931 · 24/08/2013 21:51

Tummy pain is probably swollen glands. Lots of fluids even sips of dioralite if possible. Xx
