Do you stock up

Do you stock up on things for dc or buy as you need?

I used to always buy as I needed but since having my youngest have fallen into stocking up.

I have about 200 size 3 nappies, 450 size 4 and 100 size 4+

Also have about 20 packets of wipes

Dd is also has a full 6-9 month wardrobe except for a snowsuit and I have now start on 9-12 (she's not 5 months yet)

Anyone else or am I crazy as oh thinks?

I do the same. Have now discovered Amazon subscribe and save which I my new best friend. I always have loads of nappies and wipes in stock, along with the cat and dog food and things like toilet roll. We also use Costco a lot. My friends think I'm mad.
I also plan ahead for clothes DS is in 12-18, have plenty of 18-24 ready for him, and have just ordered his bits for winter.
I think for me it's because I used to be crap with money, and at the last week of the month usually had nothing left, which is fine if you are single with no kids, but not terribly good with a family.

I wouldn't stock up that much in nappies and clothes as they might grow quickly and they won't fit.

We have supplies for everyone ie toilet roll, tooth paste, shampoo, etc so we don't have to rush out if kids are ill or something

bonzo77 · 24/08/2013 10:47

I stock up when things I use are on offer. I also keep a spare of things that it would be a pain to run out of, like formula.

Not really stocking up with clothes as We get lots of gifts which I return/ exchange and hand me downs.

Baby isn't here yet but I have 150 nappies.. Think they will be used in no time though and got them on deals.

No harm to be organised but where do you store all of that Confused

I bulk buy food on deals. ... Was fish fingers this week !!!

num3onway · 24/08/2013 10:52

Dd has nappies on a shelving unit in her room. As well as 3 storage boxes (pretty ones) and some in/on top of the wardrobe

I stock up on wipes, about a month of nappies at a time, and clothes up to about a year ahead.

Wipes, to take advantage of offers, buy four big boxes at a time.

Nappies I am about to switch to Amazon for, but buy a month at a time because I get them delivered, easier than getting from the shops. I get enough so that there is always a spare pack to go to nursery in case they run out, but not so many that I will waste lots if DC2 has a growth spurt.

Clothes, I try to buy quality stuff on eBay, in bundles. I sold a load of stuff on eBay last year and used the PayPal money to buy clothes for the DCs. I've actually reined myself in as storage became an issue and also I've found that DC1 doesn't need many clothes besides school uniform, only a few outfits for playing.

mummyxtwo · 24/08/2013 14:29

Not as much as I'd like to, due to lack of storage space. Otherwise I would buy more when on offer. I do buy the big boxes of wipes. They can take you by surprise growing out of nappies though, so I'd be wary of buying too many of the one size.

monstergoose · 24/08/2013 21:35

Def stock up, wipes especially when on offer. Nappies I buy from tesco when on offer, they'll take an in-opened pack back with or without receipt so not an issue if dd grows quick!

num3onway · 25/08/2013 07:41

As a previous poster said I think my insane hording of baby related items comes from having struggled money wise in the past
If for some reason we had a money problem all I need to find for dd at the min is ten quid for formula

I'm a stockpiler. Always on the snoop
for a bargain me.

kiwik · 28/08/2013 05:25

On food and washing powder when they're on offer, but not on things like nappies and wipes.
I tend to buy washing powder in a 5kg bag, so it lasts quite a reasonable time anyway, and buy tubs of vanish when on offer. I never have more than a couple in the cupboard at any one time though, as it's not big enough to store more than that.
Food I often buy when on special offer and stock up. I've got a lot of tinned tuna, tomatoes, baked beans and orange spaghetti in the pantry for quick lunches or suppers. Loads of bags of pasta, and a hefty 3kg bag of rice.
I'm fortunate that all my DCs are boys, so can buy clothes and know that they will get well used - I tend to buy decent stuff that won't wear out after a few wears, so that they can be passed down. (Although DS2 is a bit fussy and doesn't always want to wear hand-me-downs.Hmm) Stuff that they have grown out of and the next one hasn't yet grown into gets packed into plastic crates and stored in the under house storage (which is thankfully dry and clean).

StupidFlanders · 28/08/2013 05:38

I never stock up because I hate clutter even if its in the storage room.

The one thing I can't escape is clothes that will be passed down although I cull them ruthlessly so there's only a couple of small boxes of the few pieces i loved. It took me ages to realise that the seasons/sizings rarely lined up anyway so most hand me downs were useless.

teacher123 · 28/08/2013 10:18

I always stock up on stuff for DS, so buy the wipes and nappies I like for him when they're on offer. I've got very good at unit pricing and working out what the best deals are.

MamaTo3Boys · 28/08/2013 10:22

I buy in bulk for nappies/wipes etc simply because its cheaper to buy the boxes of them rather than the single packets.

Clothes I'm terrible with haha. After my weekly shopping the kids tend to end up with a new outfit each that seem to have found their way in to my trolley haha x

PedantMarina · 28/08/2013 10:41

Bargain hunter, me. I recently bought this years, next and the one after's supply of grey school uniform trousers because they were a great price on ebay (and getting them all sent at the same time saves on shipping).

Also bought the same pyjamas in the next sizes up because I love the design (Primarni's "rock star jungle animals" motif from a year or two ago) and I want to put off the day when my gorgeous little guy will be too big for them.

I can see how "stocking up" can slide into hoarding and buying useless things, and I think I check myself before I get that far. We have a friend who is a genuine hoarder/compulsive shopper, and she's an object lesson from time to time.

stowsettler · 28/08/2013 13:31

I don't really stock up, but I'm quite anal about noticing when things are getting a bit low. I'll buy loo roll in 18xroll packs, 2 packs of 50 nappies, wipes about 6 packs at a time, stuff like that so actually I suppose I do a bit of stockpiling.

When I was pregnant I was offered a cot, a cot-bed, 3 stair gates, 2 baby baths, a pushchair, a car seat, an activity centre, 2 baby gyms, 2 slings, 2 high chairs and multiple other stuff. I said yes to absolutely everything and passed on a lot of stuff I had more than 1 of. I spent about £150 tops on baby stuff before DD was born, and have tried to keep the frenzied buying to a minimum since!

WRT DD's clothes, a good friend gave me 5 black backs full of clothes for ages 0 - 2 years old. They're in the loft and I rotate each size every 3 months! I still can't resist buying stuff for her though.
