Potentially the dumbest question about curtains

Hi, I'm hopefully going to be a first time mum in Jan'14 and intend on having my baby in either a moses basket or crib next to my bed. The only thing is I have neither curtains or blinds in my bedroom (I'm not kinky/weird - just never got round to putting them up, plus bedroom faces onto empty field).

Will I need to block out the daylight while the baby sleeps? I have heard they are better once they've settled into a routine and can distinguish between day/night but obviously don't want the baby struggling to get the sleep it needs. The sunlight doesn't reach.

Thanks wise ones!

Yes. Newborns will sleep anywhere but as you say, you will want your baby to understand the notion of day and night. Curtains/blinds will help with this.

As your dc gets older blackout curtains + blackout blind (on there own the curtains aren't enough, esp in south facing room in summer) will be good to try avoid super late nights/unbearably early mornings when they don't think it's bedtime because it's so light.

On their own... Sorry

Just make sure you don't get blinds with trailing cords. They can be lethal to toddlers. We have blackout-lined curtains. Work very well. Congratulations on your bump!

In winter I'd say no. But in summer you want to be able to make it dark at nighttime, so get some blinds or curtains.
