How do you ever get anywhere if your toddler doesn't go in a buggy?

My son is 2.9, DD is 7 months and we have a double buggy, which he normally quite happily goes in, although I've heard of other toddlers this age who refuse to do so. I've been experimenting with not using it so much over the last couple of days.

I am wondering whether people who say they don't use a buggy any more drive everywhere. I don't usually have the car in the week so am reliant on walking or public transport. Today, we went to a stately home type place with a working farm and playground. DS walked and I had DD in a sling on my back, with a shopping trolley for all the paraphernalia without which we cannot leave the house. We had to walk to the bus stop at the end of our road (five minutes away max). It took half an hour, as we had to look at all the berries, flowers, trees, cats, etc.
Then when had to walk approx. 10 minutes back from the farm to the bus stop. I allowed half an hour. We missed the bus.

I don't like to be saying "Hurry up" all the time and it's lovely to potter along looking at things, but if you're reliant on public transport or just have to get somewhere at a certain time it can be quite difficult. I'm just wondering at what age your children stopped using the buggy, and how you get anywhere once they do!

Scooter! Or dolly buggy/shopping trolley - I find my Ds (3.7) concentrates on scooting/pushing, rather than collecting leaves/pebbles/dehydrated worms etc. Probably not much use for a stately home visit, but gets us to the local shops/nursery etc in half the time :-/

Stopped at about 2 yrs. but I did end up doing a hell of a lot of carrying...

Have you tried a buggy board if you're in a hurry? My son is 3.5 years old and more than capable of walking (although not as fast as I'd like at times) but he loves being on the buggy board, and it means you get to go at your walking pace when you're in a hurry (e.g. appointment, bus stop)

Scooter. Get toddler used to it ASAP, it's your friend now. Grin

Sling (of the short woven or mai tei variety).

DS hasn't used the buggy since about 20 months. Always been a good walker but does get distracted. I usually use bribery an incentive, such as, we need to get to the bus stop quickly so there's time to eat your raisins before the bus comes. Also I point out interesting things ahead, oh look can you see that pretty yellow flower... And then sometimes I admit I just say hurry up!

Usually dd is in front carry and rucksack on my back. She hates the buggy.

Scooter! And then I try to mostly not be in a rush so the times we do need to move I don't feel bad about pushing LO to keep walking!

We used a scooter with a dog lead attached to the front so I could pull it along if DS needed a rest!
