Breast feed and bottle feeding.

I currently breast feed my 7 week old baby, he isnt the best sleeper so we've been giving him aptamol milk before bedtime to try and fill him up so he'll sleep a little longer letting us get some much needed sleep, as he can be up a few times overnight for a breast feed. The aptamol hasnt been making much difference so i am considering using the aptomal formula before bedtime? As people say its heavier so aids sleeping a little. Has anyone else done similar? What is the difference between aptamol milk and the power formula?

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. Do you mean using powdered Aptamil instead of the ready made Aptamil cartons? I don't think that would make any difference, and unfortunately formula doesn't necessarily guarantee any better sleep. Some babies might sleep better and others won't.

Also, you might get more response if you post this is the Breast and Bottle Feeding section (under Feed the World).

The ready made of various makes is quite a different formulation so may make some difference (although not necessarily to sleeping). E.g. many of the ready mixed ones contain fish and less of the powders do.

TBH though you have a newborn - stuffing them full of any kind of formula in order to get them to sleep isn't necessarily in their best interests. You could just try a larger breast feed (keep offering the other side) at that time?

7 weeks is still very tiny to sleep however they're fed :( I've found lots of friends who found no difference when switching milk

It's a myth that babies sleep better on formula

could you just give him one extra breastfeed?

I don't think formula makes a difference as I have a younger brother who was bottlefed, and my daughter is 6 weeks old and is exclusively breastfed and my daughter sleeps better than my younger brother did.

Like QTpie my daughter can feed a lot during the day but for the last 2 weeks has only woken up once in the night with one night she actually slept through. I think they just need to find their own routine

It's really is a myth that they sleep better on formula. Ds was ff from 4 weeks. He was 7 months old before he slept for longer than 2 hours in one go.

I don't think it is a myth that ff babies sometimes sleep better. My two were mix fed and we did a bottle before bed that definitely helped, but its not a universal "fix". I know the early weeks can seem like hell but really at 7 weeks you can't really expect to be up less than at least once between say ten and six pm, quite probably twice or even more. It just come with the territory. I am all for doing what you can to help longer stretches of sleep, but don't set your expectations too high. SOME babies will sleep through by 2-3 months, but most won't. Its one of the reasons why having months of work is useful so you can sleep when they nap, or at least have lazy days not doing much. In my experience I found no difference in the effects of powder /vs ready made formula either.
