do you cut it at home? or hairdresser?

ds is 4 and hates having his hair cut, he hates the loose hairs sticking to him, and the noise of the clippers.

we sit him on a stool, in front of a big mirror, so he can see whats happening. he has a dry paintbrush to brush away any hair that halls on him, this also helps to distract him. his little sister also joins in by brushing away the hair he cant reach
if he wants, I sometimes hold his hand while DH cuts his hair. and we explain that if he cries, then even more hair will stick to him because his skin is wet.
and he gets a treat afterwards if he good.
and explain how much quicker it will be if he sits still.

Oh this is a huge issue in my house as well. Ds1 (4) absolutely hates it. Once I managed to get him to the barbers and he started off OK but when he realised what was going on he screamed the place down (but his hair did look good). Now dh cuts it with clippers and even then he cries and cries endlessly. I have tried taking him to barbers again but he starts crying outside the shop so much that the staff all look at us as if they're thnking "good grief please don't come in". So we just have the clippers and tears for now.

ds2 (2.5) hates having his hair cuttoo. We go to a hairdressers round the corner and he usually screams his way through it with us having to leave before it's finished sometimes. However last time it was OK - I went in in the morning and told them he was coming in and hated it. When we got there they had already set up a stool for him and left some toys on the shelf, and they had made sure that there were no other customers in the room (luckily they have 2 rooms!). They made a big fuss of him when he went in, showed him to his seat and talked to him for a while, then explained exactly what they were going to do. He didn't make a noise all the way through!! He didn't look very relaxed through it, but it can only get better. With ds1 (4) I take him to the barbers and they always give him a bar of chocolate afterwards so he's always good!

We got a book called "Freddy goes to the Hairdressers" and read it 3000 times and then role played hairdressers lots. When we got to the hairdressers, he sat on my lap and when the hairdresser appeared I produced a very exciting new aeroplane to play with.

In the end what did it was the fact she was very sweet and let him squirt the spray bottle wherever he wanted - mostly over me Angry

Earlybird · 15/06/2006 12:06

DD used to hate it, but we finally found a way. I would sit in the chair, dd would sit in my lap, and we would read a book together while her hair was being cut. It was the only way as she refused to sit in the chair alone.

No real advice as we'refar from haircutting stge with our baldy 6 month old..lol!

But I read somewhere that many young children don't like it as it feels as though part of them is being cut off (which it is..but obviously not a vital part!)

My aunt explained to her dds why they needed to cut it, and that it doesn't hurt, and also made up a funny story about a little girl who didn't get her hair cut and it grew and grew until birds started nesting in it, and eventully squirells and then a cow moved in..hehee
(depending on the individual child this could either be seen as a great thing or pretty scary..lol)

What about having yours done at the same time? Would that help at all?

beansontoast · 15/06/2006 12:41

i remember my nephews face...utter HORROR when he saw his hair falling down onto the floor around him... i think ds has similar feelings.

he's seen me,dp and my neice having haircuts, trims, fringes done etc...he's still pretty freaked out by it!

clippers terrify him...bless ..he is sooo sweet xx

ill prob wait a bit tbh....untill he wnats to be like his cousins etc.

you know its only cos i want him to have short hair!

Hmmm...wotcha Beans...combination of chocolate buttons immediately after, and LOTS of playing at hairdressers at home. But you have to let him be the barber, and 'cut' and comb your hair.

Yeah, of course you could leave it Smile

MadamePlatypus · 15/06/2006 22:39

We pay over the odds (£15-£20 a go) for DS (2.5)to get his hair cut at a children's hair dresser's. We used to laugh at the place before we took DS there - it also sells Dior children's clothes. However, one day DH decided to take him there and it was just so much easier that we keep going. They always have children's videos on, they are very quick and they always give DS juice and a biscuit.

oh BoT so glad this was posted by someone who lives near me.

Take him to Chill Mum in...... am I allowed to mention area or would you rather i didn't on MN.

It has an arts and crafts area, The hair bit is just 1 seat right up against a TV screen and thy'll play his fav DVD (take it with you if you want)

And with Lottie I put a hula hoop on each finger so she didn't grab scissors and was kept extra happy with crisps AND a DVD.

I was amazed how well it went aftyer our other experiences.

Let me know if I can name the street / area .

hunkermunker · 15/06/2006 22:57

Hiya BoT - second TC's recommendation of Chill Mum - DS1 has his hair cut there too!

(hi TC - how's work going? Sorry I didn't reply to your email Blush)

handlemecarefully · 15/06/2006 22:58

Ds (just 2) doesn't like haircuts. I feed him with (lentil weavers may look away now) mini cheddars. Job done.

Thomcat · 15/06/2006 23:00

hi Hunker xx

beansontoast · 16/06/2006 09:19

that all sounds miraculous enough for me!..

first,im going to try having a dvd on!!...its soooo obvious now that youve been told me tc & mp...teh ultimate distractor...of COURSE!

Food doesnt cut it as a motivator or disrrcator!

i will of course do lots of haircut game playing as part of an ongoing mission...but im really optimistic about the almost stealth approach...'underground ernie' ought to do it..

where is chill mum anyway?
