8 week old - snotty nose...

...what can I do to help.
She seems to have a mild cold or something, doesn't seem to warrant any medicine as cuddles and breastmilk seem to be soothing her, but her breathing sounds so laboured.
As an adult I know that she just needs to blow her nose and get rid of the snot, but unfortunately at 8 weeks old we're not going to get her blowing into a hanky!
I thought I'd ask mumsnet before trying the 111 service! thanks

Suck the snot out.

Makeminealarge · 16/08/2013 17:59

Where possible keep her upright to help breathing. Also agree on sucking it out, we had a nasal suction gagdet from tommy tippee. Steam out the bathroom and sit with her in there. Hope she's better soon xx

can I clarify - do I need to use a gadget or can you do this with your own mouth?
Immersion is on for a steamy bath later...

Breast milk up the nose can help loosen it.

We had a sucky gadget but it was a bit rubbish - I found sucking with my mouth easier Grin

Has she just had her jabs? My baby has been snotty since he had his 1st set.

My lo was born in December n right from 2 weeks old he seemed to have cold after cold i second the steamy bathroom to help loosen also you can get a nasal spray that is from birth but not recommend to use constantly but my doctor advised it for my ds because he would find it hard to feed because he was so bunged up. It really helped with his congestion you can get it from Tesco, chemists boots and i presume other places. Also keep the Moses basket, crib or cot raised up at the head end. Hope she's better soon x

A steamy bathroom and a saline nasal spray will work.

Ahh, those were the days; I've got my sucky 'Bogey Burglar' badge of honour too! Sometimes you've just gotta do what you've gotta do Grin

Well the sucking snot didn't achieve much other than a screaming baby. May need to practice to get that technique right!!!
But the steamy bathroom seems to have worked a treat. I hoped to give her her fortnightly bath, but she screamed so much it ended up as a sponge down whilst breastfeeding on the bathroom floor!
But breathing seems a little easier so we can always do that again tomorrow.
She's not yet had her jabs (baby brain means I turned up on the wrong day this week to get them) and we have that to look forward to next week. I'll be ready with the steamy bathroom again!
Thanks for the support and advice, she isn't doing too bad and just means I have to cuddle more and ignore boring household jobs!

Nasal aspirator - they sell them in boots. It's my favourite baby product! Teamed with sterimar nasal spray to loosen it up (though bm works too!)

HPsauceonbaconbuttiesmmm · 16/08/2013 20:45

Saline spray then nasal aspirator plus some baby nose clear drops in warm water in the room. Sorry can't link but boots sell all.
