climbing out of the highchair (9mo)! argh!

Our 9mo is very active (started crawling at 6mo, nearly walking but not quite) and has just started bringing her legs up beneath her in highchairs then pulling forward - if we didn't stop her it looks like she'd drag herself out.

Our highchair is an old hand-me-down (my old highchair from 30 years ago in fact) so it doesn't have any straps but my mum says she never had this problem with me! It happened today in a cafe too, different style of chair but still no straps.

Help?! What can we do?

Or a new high chair, we've got the Ikea Antilop, it's only around £16.

I would never put a child in a high chair without strapping them in securely. Surely most people strap their children into highchairs/pushchairs?

BikeRunSki · 12/08/2013 18:10

Ikea Amtilop with harness. It doesn' t have a footrest so it is really difficult to lever out of. My nearly 2 year old DD can get out of everything else ( including her car seat), but nit the Antilop with the strap on.

Does the antilop fold down easily? It looks like it would take up a lot of space in our pokey flat.

Buying straps is the best idea!

I don't understand why so many cafes have standard highchairs without straps.

Do they grow out of this?!

You are expected to always sit with them in cafes. I was in one this weekend with a tiny 6mo who has mastered putting her foot up on the seat to try to climb out :)
At home, get a good strap/harness so you can turn your back but in a cafe or restaraunt just stay with them..

BeauNatt · 12/08/2013 18:27

Well yes, I am always with her when she's in the highchair, it's just a shame to have to keep one hand on her throughout the meal Grin

Reins. The old fashioned ones with a harness and clips, plus the loops that you can attach to anything. I never went anywhere without them. Literally a life saver.

badguider · 12/08/2013 21:18

My relative with the tiny 6mo is training her that she doesn't get food with her foot up on the seat... she just gently puts her foot down again and won't feed her another bit of food till she does it. I think that's going to be easier than trying to hold her down :)

3littlefrogs · 12/08/2013 21:26

I wish your friend good luck with that...

Badguider - not sure that will work once escaping toddler mindset is set!

Ikea Antilop is the only option. Trust me. I've tried them all! You can take legs out easily and then it's super small to store. No need for tray bit really.

BeauNatt · 12/08/2013 23:32

Badguider - I can't see how that'd work with a 6mo let alone an active 9mo (plus we're doing completely BLW so the 'no food until...' thing wouldn't work as she already has food in her hands iyswim).

Anyway the reins/harness thing looks like a great idea, portable too so even better.

My 8.5 month (who is just like your 9 month old in terms of activity) is trying to climb out the Antilop.

He almost pushed the whole thing over while in it the other day by pushing his feet against the dining room table.

The strap helps. But I'm going to have to sit him in the middle of the room away from anything else. Hmm

This child is going to kill me off.... Hmm
