Im looking for some good children's books for my daughters first birthday that we can read to her.... Does anyone know any good ones? And any book sets that are a good buy?

My DD (13 months) loves lift the flap books atm, good ones include Dear Zoo (and others by the same author), Where's Spot? (and other Spot books) and the Tales from Acorn Wood stories by Julia Donaldson. We love Julia Donaldson's 'normal' books too, The Gruffalo is a classic, I also rate Monkey Puzzle and Stick Man. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Peepo, Each Peach Pear Plum and Hairy Maclary are all classics which we read a lot atm.

We have some of the ones above like each peach pear plum, and dear zoo that we love reading. We have a few from the 'that's not my' range which dd loves, as she loves touching and feeling and looking for the little mouse.

Great suggestions on here already. If you post in the children's books section you might get a few more replies Smile

I have just been given Where Is The Green Sheep which is absolutely awesome and I love. I am not 1YO but I'm sure it's aimed more at that market than ladies in their mid-30s. And my 8WO looks in the direction of the book when I read it to her, too. Such a gifted child!

Pip and Posy books by Axel Scheiffler, all the stories are lovely and not too long either.

My 18 month old loves:

The very busy spider & The very hungry caterpillar - Eric Carle

The Bedtime Bear - Ian Whybrow (although she was a bit young for it and pulled the pop up bits too far out!)

Goodnight Moon - Margaret Wise Brown

Toes, Ears & Nose - Marion Dane Bauer

Fox's socks - Julia Donaldson / Axel Scheffler

Spot says goodnight - Eric Hill

The Big Night-night book - Georgie Birkett (her fave)

Sean have a yawn - Sally Symes

Ladybird touch and feel fairy tales

Notsoyummymummy1 · 14/08/2013 21:07

Sorry that should be Sean GAVE a yawn - bloomin' auto text!

Agree with all of matriarchal dreams suggestions! Can't beat Julia Donaldson (for older kids too, but lots will appeal to very young toddlers - monkey puzzle was an early hit) and the very hungry caterpillar and dear zoo are fab for little ones.

Also, Dorling Kindersley do a series called Peekaboo with flaps / textures etc, which DD loved when very small. And That's When I'm Happy by Jacqeline East.

Great suggestions already - just to add that from about 12-18 months dd also loved those books that are just pages and pages of photos of everyday objects, animals, vehicles etc, and they really helped her start to talk and name things. Actually she still loves them at 2.5....

Agree with many of the above. Hairy Maclary books and anything by Julia Donaldson has been a great hit with my dc's! Can't beat The Snail and the Whale. Quentin Blake books are also lovely and beautifully illustrated and imaginative - Patrick and Cockatoos are ds1's faves.

For little ones, Snuggle Bunny is lovely, with a soft toy hand puppet bunny to stroke while you read the bedtime story.
