I have decided the time is right to start potty traininfg my 15 monthd old DD. She hlds onto her parts when she needs a wee if she is nappy less. (poos are a different story, she just goes for them!!!)

But where do you start???

I have purchased a potty, now what?

She is my first so any tips please!

Bare bum, whenever she wees put her on the pot and say "on the potty then, good girl!"

personally I would leave it, their bladders aren't really big enough to hold it. It is one thing knowing you need a wee, another to hold it until you get to the loo.

I thought 18 months was the minimum age recommended but can't remember why. I think something to do with connection between needing to go and going being formed at that stage ...but I've only just started so you had better await help from the experts......
My nursery started a regular sitting habit (about 3x a day) from 18 months so I followed their lead at home. They weren't expected to do anything, just get used to the potty and some of them sat with nappy on to start with (very softly softly approach)You can read a story to them to encourage them while they sit if they are into that - my ds loves books so it worked with him.

Is it too early to start then you think?

If you think shes ready, have a go. If she then doesnt seem interested then leave it for a while. She is still very young imo.

PetitFilou1 · 13/06/2006 15:27

Surely that was toilet timing not toilet training (ie sitting her baby on the pot just as she knew it was about to do something) - that is something completely different to them actually knowing they need to go, finding the potty or telling someone they need it, pulling their pants down, going (and later wiping their own bum and washing their own hands!) Can your dd say wee and poo yet? It is hard work, if I were you I wouldn't be in any rush!

Georgiesmum · 13/06/2006 15:31

No she cant say we or poo yet, Im not in a rush tbh I just thought that seeing as she was telling me she was ready. Also with the weather being nice I thought any extra washing would dry quicker!

The \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/bigissues/potty.html\Mumsnet guide} says probably not ready before 18 months, but why not give it a go and see what happensSmile. My DS is 2.5, and I'm thinking of having a go in August.

Georgiesmum · 23/06/2006 13:42

Tried...failed...wait until talking properly!!

She looked at the potty walkied off and did a wee in my shoe!!

Hows that for a bad start!

Georgiesmum MY DS showed signs or of wanting potty etc from being 16mths but he couldnt talk or pull his pants down etc. He wouls happily sit on his potty and wee but would also not bother if he had a nappy on. So I used to just leave the potty around when he was bare bummed but didnt do anything about training until he was 2.2yrs and he said no nappies. He trained really easily in a few days and is dry both day and night at 2.8yrs old.

Kidstrack · 23/06/2006 13:51

Georgiesmum, you do what you feel works for you, personally i would not actively train at 15m but would encourage your dd if she wants to use a potty for wees etc you could do a time off nappy session where at same time every day you could take her nappy off and if she uses the potty, Fantastic if not it doesn't mattter at this stage, as for pants and toilets i would leave well alone till at least 2yrs
