My newborn wont sleep at night!

Our DS is 8 days old and he is our first. He was quite poorly after the birth so we've only just come home from hospital. The days are pretty consistent with long ish feeds followed by sleep which can be up to 15 mins - 3 hours long. However at night he won't sleep. He feeds almost constantly, fussed or cries. Any tips to deal with this or just some reassurance that this is normal and will improve as we're completely shattered already!!!

Dummy is a godsend when settling at night but maybe let bf get properly established first - the baby is setting up supply - give it a couple more weeks ...

Also breast milk has sleepy hormones in it at night ... So you are helping set baby's body clock ...

It was bf support counsellor who told me dummy is fine for settling after a feed - ie not to replace feeds.. Do what works and don't feel bad if you do use a dummy I used one from about a month in and ds was breast fed with no bottles at all until 8 months

If you want information you can trust look at the website kellymom or ring one of the Bfing Helplines. All of their information will be evidence based, rather than one person's opinion.

The websites the analytical armadillo, ask moxie, Isis and askdrsears are all good too Smile

The one thing I wouldn't do is listen to anyone unqualified who gave bfing advice when they didnt also offer evidence to back it up. A BFC will always give you the latest evidence based information Smile

Look up the bfn. Sounds like that was really terrible advice. If your baby needs to suck its because he is hungry. Mother Nature intended for baby's to feed through the night. You just have to go with it!
