cloth nappies for newborn

I am expecting my 2nd baby in september and want to try and get him in to cloth nappies earlier than I did with DS1. I only have tots bots size 2 nappies which I realise will be far too big for a newborn.
I can't really afford to buy a load of size 1 nappies, which will be grown out of within weeks. I had a look at the Bambino Mio nappies that my SIL is using at the weekend and they seem to be just folded cloth inside a wrap. Is it possible to do this with maybe a muslin or a piece of fleece, as I gues this would work out much cheaper for me and I would only need to buy wraps (I already have a load of unused muslins that I have never used for 'mopping up')

Yes you can do exactly this. Use muslins or terries with a fleece liner and a wrap. You will have to use smaller sized wraps but you can hire them from the nappylady (six for £15 for as long as you need them). I think the small motherease wraps go up to 10lbs but that's off the top of my head.

You can find folds for the muslins or terries online - WEN and the nappylady have them but I'm sure there are plenty of other sites too.

You can buy terries incredibly cheaply on the high street. I got mine in Boots (six for £9). Used these until my second child was big enough for her big sister's motherease hand me downs (about three months). Before that the motherease swamped her bum and there was too much cloth between her legs. The muslins were fine to start with but terries are more absorbant.

Would also recommend highly using nappy nippas to fasten your muslins / terries.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy esp with this heat!

Also if you have nippa Tots then you CAN use them on a newborn, although it will make your baby look ike a weeble. You can overlap the ends and fold the front down. Muslins are probably the way to go for the first few weeks at least, though, since you have them already.

Thanks!
I have aplix tots bots - so that's not an option.
I have been checking out ebay and can pick up some second hand wraps quite cheaply - there are loads of cotton bottoms ones - but I've heard these aren't that good, or is that just the nappy as apposed to the wrap.
I am sure I will be able to pick up loads of muslins on ebay as well.

What about buying some 2nd hand Tots sz 1's? The market has dropped for them recently, so they're fairly cheap, and you can just resell them a few months later anyway.

If you want to buy some prefolds, I have a load you can have for not much more than the P&P (I've invested in Tots 1's for this baby).

I'd go for a gusseted wrap (like ME Rikki wrap) if using prefolds/terries/muslins, as you need something to catch the poo which the elastic in the leg of the Tots will normally do.
