Cloth nappy newbies - hows it going...?

Dd is 9 months old and we switched to cloth nappies about 3 weeks ago and so far i think its fab. i've bought 6 nappies - 3 meos, a bamboozle, a ellas house bumhugger and a kissaluvs colours. My definate fave is the bamboozle Smile. Next I'm contemplating a heiny hugger and maybe a wool wrap....

Just wondered how the other nappy newbies were getting on and your loves/hates so far?

I'm a fairly new cloth nappy convert - we#ve been using them for about 2 months and DD is 8.5 months.

DD mainly wears tots bots - she also has some clwt twts, some bamboozles and an ella's house hemp nappy. She wears a variety of motherease airflow wraps, tots fleece wrap, weenotions wraps and a nature babies one.

Don't like aplix motherease wraps - they never seem to fasten up properly (so we stick with airflow Smile)

I am impressed at how restrained you have been so far....our nappy collection is a little larger Blush.

PiccadillyCircus · 12/06/2006 15:23

Just remembered the bumbles we have as well...

Raggydoll · 12/06/2006 15:34

I know - its killing me not to order more... unfortunately i'm a bit restrained by cash but as you can see i'm already planning what to spend the next spare 30 quid on Grin. i have 2 nature babies wraps but i'm not keen - i think its because i don't like to see lots of unused velcro iykwim. i prefer my airflow but they don't do many nice designs.

our boy has been in cloth nearly 3 months now! So maybe I'm not a newbie anymore. Last week he had a week in disys while we were on holiday and I'm glad to be back to cloth again now. The smell is sooooo much beter.

PiccadillyCircus · 12/06/2006 21:41

My nature babies wraps have poppers. Like you I don't really like velcro fastening.

SoupDragon · 13/06/2006 10:28

I think DD has been in cloth for, er, a fortnight? 3 weeks maybe? I'm not 100% convinced about it but I think that's just me getting used to it.

sassy · 13/06/2006 10:32

Just started dd2 in cloth. We have minky yoyos - she's already 17mo and these are like pull-ups so I thought they'd be more versatile.

LIke soupy, I'm not 100% sure yet, but will persevere!

Raggydoll · 13/06/2006 11:04

what is it about them that you're not sure of...?

OP posts:
sassy · 13/06/2006 11:07

I think its just getting used to them. The shape - much bulkier - the need to change more frequently ; and the irrational concern that they MUST be too hot in current weather. (I know disp's are just as hot cos of all the plastic etc but YKWIM>)

FlameBoo · 13/06/2006 11:15

I took at least a month, maybe two to be convinced iir.

If you're worrying about the heat, then maybe fleece or wool wraps would be good.

(Hmmm... just read that you're on yoyos, and SD is bumgenius so no help there either Blush)

Raggydoll - wool or fleece could suit you though Grin You can get poppered fleece ones from bumsnugglers (can't remember the url, but type bumsnugglers into yahoo and it comes up).

FlameBoo · 13/06/2006 11:16

I never seem to change them much more than I would a disposable Blush

sassy · 13/06/2006 11:17

yoyos are all-in-ones, fleece outer. So prob not that hot, but look it!

FlameBoo · 13/06/2006 11:27

Just keep reminding yourself that even though they look hot, they have a lot more air circulating her girly bits than disposables would, and they will be saving you a small fortune.

juuule · 13/06/2006 11:29

Minki yoyos have a polyester fleece inner which could be warmer than cotton. In this weather overI would prefer cotton over polyester fleece or wool.

UniSarah · 13/06/2006 19:48

for wot its worth, I'm now so used to cloth taht when hes in disys I find I change them more often because i'm not used to how much they hold.

SoupDragon · 13/06/2006 19:51

I've had leaking round the legs. It seems to be where the stretchy sides are as these bits seem to get wet.

misdee · 13/06/2006 19:54

am not a newbie, but after a weekend of using dispicables, dd2 was back in a cloth nappy as soon as we walked in the door.

FlameBoo · 13/06/2006 20:08

I'd be like that too misdee - I was in asda just now, and realised I wouldn't even know what size to buy in disposables!!!!

I hate the idea of having to use them now, they actually seem more work for some bizarre reason.

spugs · 03/07/2006 22:31

been using them for about 2 mths and i think there fab, wish id realised about them with my 1st but figured they would be white sqs that you had to soak in a big smelly bucket!! I love my fuzzi bunz. i tried the tots bots but couldnt get on with the fact that they have wet terry up against there skin - plus theres two parts to wrap round them.

olivia35 · 03/07/2006 22:41

On my 2nd child in cloth - we started using them for ds @ 6 months. Dd has had cloth from 1 week old.

It's saved us a fortune, neither has ever had nappy rash while wearing washables, & we've just sold a load of surplus nappies (as ds now in Happy Heiny pull-ups) on ebay for not much less than we paid.

lol @ 'dispicables' btw . We still use them for weekends away, & ds's CM won't be convinced to try washables. Ugh.

Raggydoll · 05/07/2006 11:45

i have bought a wool wrap but its huge - i bought the 12 to 18 months and it would probably fit ds whose 2.5 (might ty it on him at night actually).

Doing great! We made the switch a couple of months ago and never looked back. DD2 is 7 months next week.

REALLY love the Kissaluvs for day and hte Bamboozle for night.

Already she's outgrown a TotsBots unbleached. Need to sell it off and a size 1 fleece wrap - unusued - and a size 1 green Rainbow Bots nippa - also unused.

And a white Airflow wrap - Medium - slightly used, NO stains, but DD2 suits the Rikki better.

Raggydoll · 05/07/2006 12:00

hi expat - how are you getting on at night. i admit i've still been putting 'dispicables' on at night . dd sleeps through 12 hours and was worried cloth wouldnt cope...

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 05/07/2006 12:01

a bamboozle + booster is doing the trick for dd2, raggy.

BUT she is not a heavy wetter, either.

Raggydoll · 05/07/2006 12:02

okay - i have that combo

can anyone else give me reassurnace that she won't wake up a 3 am with soggy bed
