nappy free time?? thoughts??

I often let my one year old have a wander about in the buff when we are home. ~ appreciating that walking about with a sack of pee strapped to her in this heat must be irritating, but twice this week she has shit on my cream carpets, whilst standing pointing at them saying "oh". . I've joked about it with friends and they've all told me they never let their kids go nappy free. . .

she also dropped one out on my Alan Carr autobiography last week. I won't forgive her for that.

lol! Grin poor Alan

I always feel bad for not giving ds more nappy free time, as it's something midwives and hv recommended, but he's not that happy in the buff.

TooTabooToBoo · 27/07/2013 00:12

My DD once spent almost an entire summer nekkid.

In fact, it was 2006 (last heatwave) and she was 3.5 yo.

Admittedly we were potty training so it helped lots.

DS is 4 mo and he has minimum of twice a day bare-bum time. Imagine having a nappy on 24 hours a day - eurgh, sweaty.

I get a towel and lie him on his mat, he can piddle away to his hearts content and I just wipe him up if he does wee. Poo is another matter, bit more of an arse-ache to clean but it has only happened once.

Let the bums roam free I say.

GlitterFingers · 27/07/2013 00:17

It's all about timing just make sure she has pooed before taking the nappy off then you have at least an hour. Or nappy free outside

I have always given mine bare bum time everyday when little, I think its good for them t get some air to their bits, can't be nice wearing a nappy all the time. It helps in the run up to potty training as they become aware of what's happening. Its no big deal to clean up, she little and non mobile I would lie them on towel and as they got older I jsit had wipes and cloth at hand for any accidents.

misslaw · 27/07/2013 00:36

poor Alan indeed! He went straight in the bin.

timing doesn't play a great factor here I'm afraid, it doesn't matter in the slightest if she's just been, she will still slip one out without warning. Grin Grin

Seems like you are just making things very hard for yourself - nappy free time is fair enough but with cream carpets?

In fact how have you still got cream carpets with a young child!!Grin

Maybe just limit it to when your playing outside in the sunshine?

Miggs28 · 27/07/2013 07:46

I give my DS free time as much as I can, he's not up and about just yet so we do the same as TooTaboo and lie him on his mat with a towel and he pees and poops to his hearts content Smile

Maybe you could limit the nappy free time to one room and lay a bed sheet or some large towels down to protect your carpets abit?

I never gave my 2.6 year old nappy free time either until we started potty training. If DC doesn't have nappy rash and you change it once it's reasonably full to stop clamminess I don't think no nappy free time is a problem if it makes things easier for you, you'll spend enough time clearing up accidents when you start potty training.

HappyGoLuckyGirl · 27/07/2013 17:43

I've a 5 week old DS and he's only been nappy free a handful of times. Specifically for the reason that when he pees it bloody shoots everywhere! I wish I could pop him on a towel and let him wiggle but the pee is more likely to end up on my walls than on the towel. Envy

Xihha · 27/07/2013 17:49

When mine were babies I used to let them lay on a towel for a bit, especially after a bath then once my kids were about 1 they only wore nappies during the day if we were going out or had anyone round, the potty was always in whichever room they were playing in and when they missed it was no big deal as i had laminate floors.

DD is now 4, nearly 5 and has spent most of the past week naked though so maybe I should of taught her to wear clothes more often before she learned how to take her clothes off!

Figgygal · 27/07/2013 17:52

I have to admit we never do it with 19mo ds god help us when potty training comes around

shewhoknowsall · 28/07/2013 10:14

We've been letting DS (15mths) go nappy free quite a lot over the last few months due to the heat. He loves it so much. Yes we've had a few Pee accidents but nothing that can't be cleaned up with a mop. DS usually only has a poo after eating his lunch/dinner so I was always careful not to take off his nappy until he'd have his poo.
A few wks back we were out in the back garden and we had taken off his nappy and he was crawling around (still not walking) when I heard a scream from DH LOL DS had had a poo and was trying to grab at it and DH in all his useless glory panicked as he can't multi task i.e. pick DS up and get rid of the poo. I'm more careful now taking off his nappy but accidents do and will happen LOL

YoniBottsBumgina · 28/07/2013 10:29

I used to love letting DS be nappy free. I'd hate to wear nappies all the time too. Sanitary towels are bad enough!

I found 1001 carpet spray excellent - needs more scrubbing than the bottle says but works wo nderswhen you Di it properly.

SpooMoo · 28/07/2013 18:00

We live in a rented flat with no garden. DD (9mo) has never had any nappy-free time. Bit
too risky! Seems a rather bourgeois luxury really Wink

My DD 2yo has nappy off time every evening-it's a good opportunity for me to make sure she doesn't have nappy rash and all is well. We have the odd accident but not many.

Oh and she's stunningly beautiful and I don't want her to be ashamed of her loveliness.

In this weather especially my DD has been having a good play in the garden with no nappy on each day. She usually has a little naked crawl around the bathroom before her bath going from me to DH as a little game. I like to give her a few minutes before putting a clean nappy on too.

She seems to find being naked brilliant fun! She's 14 months so and only had 1 wee on the kitchen floor so far.

jammiedonut · 28/07/2013 19:29

Ds has at least an hour nappy free a day, usually before bath time so his bits get a jolly good airing, it also helps calm him down, lord knows why! We always put a cheap shower curtain down covered by a soft blanket so he can lay/ walk about but as he's always supervised he never gets a chance to pee on our pink carpet! You can time ds' pood though, usually about 20 mins after a meal, so would always wait a good hour or so post meal to avoid any brown accidents!

mrsmartin1984 · 28/07/2013 20:41

I never give nappy free time. But I use real nappies and they are kinder to their bum compared to disposables. DD only gets nappy rash with them when we go away for the weekend

misslaw · 28/07/2013 21:05

she's never had nappy rash (touch wood) and i am a firm believer that it's because of nappy free time. She loves being in the buff I was just slightly perplexed at my friends reactions and who knows. . perhaps Alan Carr deserved it lol.
