Baby will be 6 months in 3 days- I offered some baby rice today, was this the wrong thing to do?

Since baby is not exactly 6 months? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question!

Ds just ate it, screwed face up a bit at first but it was fine.

My question is, what next- do I just keep going with rice for a week or so and then introduce a new food?

Have I early weaned but not waiting longer?

You haven't weaned early but baby rice is yuck

Offer steamed veggies and stuff - at 6 months your baby can eat pretty much everything

Toast, pasta, avocado - things which can be gripped and gnawed are good

MrsPercyPig · 26/07/2013 19:54

Can a baby eat toast? Sorry, but how?

Do I need to mash it?

I would be nervous about giving a baby pasta! Can they eat it at 6 months?

Mash up ripe avacado and banana - always a favourite!

Baby rice is never right, bleugh!

Nicknamefail · 26/07/2013 19:56

You don't need to mash anything, google baby led weaning for ideas, or yiu can mash everything. Your choice! As long as you don't give honey, whole nuts or anything low fat, you can't really go wrong. Enjoy!

SirBoobAlot · 26/07/2013 19:57

Baby rice is pointless, it's gross, and has no nutritional value whatsoever.

Ellen7 · 26/07/2013 19:58

Have a look round Internet for baby led weaning or annabel karmel recipies if you are unsure and need to be guided a bit. I started my six month old off with very soft steamed veg and fruit.

HPsauceonbaconbuttiesmmm · 26/07/2013 19:58

It's surprising what they can and will eat! This is the NHS advice on weaning which is pretty comprehensive.

It's great fun watching them learn to eat, but baby rice is really yuck!

rubyslippers · 26/07/2013 19:58

A baby will gum the toast

No need for mashing

BoohPear · 26/07/2013 20:01

I was wondering this, do you wait until they are past 6 months? Eg baby born on 15 December, do you start after 15 June or just anytime around then?

MrsPercyPig · 26/07/2013 20:02

Right I will. It use baby rice again, sorry!

Can I give mashed sweet potato

OP posts:
MrsPercyPig · 26/07/2013 20:03

I will NOT use baby rice again!

You really don't need to be so specific about the timing - around 6 months is fine. Both mine were weaned early at 4 months and were fine - they were very hungry boys.

It is amazing how much they can eat without teeth - you will be surprised!

MsJupiterJones · 26/07/2013 20:05

I offered soft veg from 5.5 months - carrots he struggled with, but broccoli went down well. Then added meat, toast etc. He manages it very well!

Baby rice is quite useful for thickening soup if you get a free pack in the post.

When DS1 was a baby it was 4 months.

I prepared the two teaspoonsful with trepidation. Fed them to him. He ate them, then gave me the most profound "well where's the rest of it then?" look.

Please don't worry about being 3 days short. You've done fab getting him to last this long.

MrsPercyPig · 26/07/2013 20:08

I guess I just assumed that you had to give baby rice food and then introduce the other foods.

So, if I give him a little square of toast in the morning, he will be fine to munch on it?

I've had to resist a lot of pressure not to feed earlier so thanks for saying that balloon

I have it in my head from somewhere that I have to feed vegetables first and no fruit as if he gets a taste for the sweet fruit, he won't eat vegetables. Is this a load of rubbish?

OP posts:
MrsPercyPig · 26/07/2013 20:12

I feel a bit disappointed that the first food I gave him was something he would have found disgusting though.

Will he remember in the morning?
