How do free preschool hours work?

My DS currently attends nursery 2 days a week and lives it there so I'd like to keep him there if possible.

When he turns 3 the fees drop from £60 a day to £40. I think that saving doesn't cover the full govt funding so I'm wondering can I too it up with an additional morning or two a week at a preschool?

Are you allowed to mix and match like that? Where can I get more information?

Do check but I think that might be the full 15 hours deducted . The govt doesn't cover the same amount to the nursery as you pay. Nursery will know how they calculate it .

You basically get 15 hours the term after they are 3.each county is different and here the lea pay £3.45 per hour. Nurseries are not allowed to charge a top up rate but they can charge for an hours care over lunch or extra hours outside of the session times. Talk to your nursery and ask to see an exact break down of fees.
If you don't need him to attend all day maybe he could do 5 mornings 9-12 (for example) which would be free?!
