What am I doing wrong- washing nappies

Help, I'm new to this cloth nappy lark...so I put a half load of nappies in with some white towels (to make up a full load) only one nappy had poop on it....nappies came out ok, the dirty one was a bit poo stained ...but oh my word - the white towels were COVERED in poo stains! Somehow in the wash the poo from one nappy had seeped onto towels and stuck solid. What am I doing wrong?! Should I pre wash nappies and then put in bits to make up a load? Tell me what you do.

I only ever wash nappies on their own and use a paper liner to catch the solid bits, and I always rinse first as I heard somewhere nappies needed lots of water!! I am by no means an expert, hopefully one will be along soon! Hope the poop washes out!Smile

Thanks mrsspencerreid I used a microfibre liner and she's only three months so there is minimal solid bits iykwim. I rinsed said liner in the loo as well so go most of it off...can't understand how it went so wrong! Have washed towels twice and they still look pretty grim - think I might need to bleach them - oh dear

Oh no! Use a cold rinse cycle before your wash, that should help. Also before you consider bleaching the towels leave them out in the sun, it really helps.

I always washed only nappies with nappies and did a cold rinse first.

I don't mix my nappies with any other laundry.

Remember a cold pre-wash before the main wash cycle followed by an extra rinse.

Cold rinse first without the rest of the laundry, leave the towels out in this glorious sunshine - you'll be amazed!

HI there. Dd now four months and finally getting hang of the nappy washing. We do a nappy only wash because bugs can linger and you'd not want them on anything your lo sucks or has on her face. Cold pre wash with no detergent. Longest forty degree cycle you can find. Dry on line or at least in sunny window as sun bleaches out stains. We still have liquid poo. If there's so much we can pour/scrape some down loo we do. Ones where it's gone everywhere I soak in cold water til the wash, others get dry pailed. After taking advice and trial and error this is what 's worked for us. Oh, and use third of your regular detergent and use non bio powder. Not ecover though. And finally, We do three days of nappy in a wash. You shouldn't leave poo ones longer than that and with a not quite full load you get a better wash. Good luck!

I always wet pailed ours, rinsing off as much poo as possible first and only ever washed nappies with nappies. We also used liners in the nappies.

I also dried them (even partially) outside at every given opportunity to get rid of any stains.

I wash nappies on their own. I like to use fabric con on my clothes and that's a big no no with reusable nappies. My washing machine has an intensive wash button, which I do instead of a cold rinse. And I use a few drops of tea tree oil to act as a natural disinfectant. My baby is EBF so her poos are runny. I use bambinex liners. Really like them, they are flushable and reusable. So if their wet you stick them in the wash with the rest of them and if soiled chuck them. They are also quite thick for liners so they catch the bulk of they poo. And just wipe off the rest with a baby wipe

Thanks ladies, all very good tips! I'm still new to this cloth nappy thing! I only have a small stash at the moment and am hoping to wash every other day. I quite like a rumperooz wet bag I've been borrowing from a local nappy library and hope to use one of these instead of a bucket ( we don't have much room in our bathroom or kitchen for a nappy bucket). At the moment I'm finding it hard to gather a full wash load and so was trying to save water and make it a full load. Unfortunately my washing machine doesn't have a half load option else I would use this. My little ones poo is like dye! It's unbelievable! The three day pile sounds good, I had better get building up my supply!
