When to buy shoes?

DD is 15 months in a couple of weeks

She's just started doing some steps every day, she will do 5 or 6 in a row a few times a day, she started doing this on Tuesday and 11 steps is the most I've seen her do!

When shall I get her some shoes am I supposed to wait until she is confidently walking about or shall I get her some now? :)

I can't actually remember what age my two were when they first got shoes but what I do remember reading in several places is that you should only get shoes when they start walking outdoors. So at the moment if it's just a few steps in the living room, it is probably a bit early, unless she would be walking alongside the buggy for example or in the park.

Such an exciting milestone though :)

My DD started walking just before 1st birthday, but weather was glorious & she is very nosy so she was outside within days. We got shoes pretty quick. You really only need them for when they are walking outside (or if their little feet are really cold in winter in the house).
DD still mostly goes barefoot in the house, so do we as it's cleaner than dragging in pavement dirt.

Agree with fuzzpig - there's no rush until she's walking confidently (think the recommended minimum is around six weeks after proper steps) - also, stick with 'cruisers' (the soft-soled ones) for as long as you can when you do end up having to buy any.

Thanks all I will hold off then for now!

I'm in no rush to spend £30 in clarks but I do feel a bit bad dropping her off at nursery and her nanas with bare feet! She is really big (had to buy her an age 2-3 dress last week) so she looks funny without shoes sometimes

They recommend six weeks after they are walking properly. Get some soft pre walker shoes as they won't harm the development of their feet. We got some lovely ones from clarkes.

The more time your child can spend in stocking soles or barefeet the better. AFAIK there is no developmental benefit to wearing shoes. They simply protect the feet when outdoors. You can get these lovely little leather , breathable slipper from the likes of Inch Blue if your child's feet are cold indoors.

My daughter started wearing Start Rite prewalkers as soon as she was ready to take a few steps in the park.

I got mine cruisers as soon as they took their first steps, both of them were able to toddle about in the park a few days after their first steps. My 16 month old likes to "help" me push his pushchair instead of him sitting in it and will walk really far like that. I don't drive so we do lots if walking. For around the house and in the garden mine are barefoot. If you do decide to get some shoes soon, Clarks are having a sale. I just got ds2 a pair of cruisers for 7 quid in store Shock
