Burping - need advice please

Hi

I'm a 1st time mum to an 8 week year old. During the 1st month my DD did little or no vomiting.

However, recently she had started vomiting alot more, to the point where I thought she may have reflux. In the past few days I've been religiously burping her after every feed and noticed the vomiting has decreased substantially. However the problem is that if I have fed her lying down, she falls asleep so peacefully that me burping her then disturbs her, and then it takes around 30 min to settle her and put her back to sleep! Any advice as to what to do as I am knackered!

I'm a bit guilty of feeding and putting straight down to sleep too. 5 week old ds doesn't spit up too much but I don't always want to wake him to burp especially as he uses feeding as a comfort to settle.

Wind her while she's lying on her side - I gently rubbed their sides while feeding which usually helped.

I never burp my baby if she falls asleep while feeding. It used to wake her up then I would have to feed her to sleep again!
If she's in her own bed, raise the head up, that helps my DD's reflux.

If she's got reflux keep upright for 20 mins or so after a feed and tilt the cot mattress. Winding regularly helps. We used to wind after every ounce throughout a feed.

It's normal for babies to posset, my DS used to projectile vomit an entire feed, that erm..isn't.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 19/07/2013 18:37

I didn't burp either of mine. If she's very windy could it be tongue tie?

ButteryJam · 19/07/2013 20:40

She has been checked for tounge tie and she doesn't have that. S

It's difficult to burp her sideways and she won't do a burp that way anyways, I have tried.

Any other ideas?

FluffDragon, do you find if you don't burp LO vomits more?

Same issue here - would be interested to see some ideas!

I tend not to wind her at night and she falls right back asleep as she feeds - but the mornings are pretty fraught as she struggles and screams to get it all out.

My DS is very refluxy but also such a poor sleeper that I dread disturbing him for burping! We don't have a perfect solution yet, but our two best tips from our HV and doctors so far are:

  1. Night feeding lying tummy to tummy - you can do a search on 'biological nursing, the la leche league also has quite a bit in this. We find that this helps as he often burps midway through, and by the end he is drowsy but not 100% asleep, so it's less disruptive to put him over my shoulder to wind if it is still necessary.
  2. If you do need to wind, be sure to rub upwards on the left rather than patting - this causes less reflux and has the advantage of being less likely to wake them up! Or even holding the baby upright against you for a few minutes sometimes gets the wind out with no need for action on your part.

Am also watching other people's tips with interest!

You could try burping partway through the feed so there is less to get up at the end.

Feedthebirds · 20/07/2013 14:43

My advice would be always to burp halfway through and after feeds until the refluxy symptoms settle. Gentle strokes upwards on the back, rather than pats. Cuddling all the while. Once the wind is out - and it has to come out somehow or other - without the acid having risen into the gullet, your baby should sleep more soundly.

I burped after feeds as they got older then rocked back to sleep. With dd once she could sit up, it was easier and she got used not being fed to sleep so I could pop her back into her after winding and she'd settle easily. She rarely falls asleep feeding now.

Hey hun, I feel your pain

My first DS was terrible with wind and DS2 is 2 weeks old and another burper. I am already fed up of winding. It sometimes takes longer than the feed. From my experiences I found the following

Try and prevent too much air getting in so check their sucking/latch.
We used infacol with DS1 which helped a little. My SIL swears by it.

Deffo burp halfway through a feed.

Try not to let them fall asleep on a burp. I can wind DS2 in his sleep after a feed.

Walking up and down stairs can get rid of a stubborn burp. hurts the thighs tho x

When burping gets frustrating, try and do a (safe) job to distract you. I place DS2 over my shoulder and empty the dishwasher, or wipe the bathroom or something. the variable movement helps the burp come up and you feel as if you have at least got something done.

I have bought a baby bjorn so i can burp him and run around after DS1.

It does get better hun xx

If she's been checked fo tt it might be worth getting her checked again. Its notoriously easy to miss. In fact there is a whole thread of MNers that had all been told their Lo didn't have tongue tie, only to find out later they did...

MIRACLE CURE FOR MY BABY'S TRAPPED WIND!!
I am a mother of a 2 month old baby girl.
I have been really upset by her constant crying/lack of sleep
for us both.
She kept making pushing noises like she was in pain and tensing her body up and
it really made me feel so helpless!!
I had tried all the different ways of holding her & bought Infacol and found none of them to be very helpful.
I spent a while googling it one night and someone mentioned that proping the baby up on a
few pillows so they were in a sideways sitting position helped them,
I tried it with not much hope but OH MY GOD!! I am so glad I did as she has
not been in pain since! It's a bit of a pain at night as I can't lie down and feed her I have to be as upright as
possible but it's well worth it as she is such a happy baby now!! now I can enjoy her!
