Tips for nappy rash?

This lovely warm weather has had the nasty side effect of giving 9 month old ds his first bout of nappy rash.
We are using sudocream, which I thought was supposed to be a miracle cream, but it's still there a couple of days since using it. Is this normal, and if not, any ideas on what we can use instead, please?

Use water and cotton wool instead of wipes. Try bepanthen during the day (it's a milder barrier cream) and metanium at night (metanium is medicated, it's quite strong so I wouldn't use it all the time). Also, to leave him without a nappy for a few minutes regularly throughout the day. Don't fasten the nappy too tightly to let the air circulate. Long soak in the bath in the evening, or even two baths a day if it's bad.

Water with bicarbonate of soda in it to wash his bum and in his bath. It's amazing. No wipes no bubble bath. Then get some metanium from the chemist/supermarket. You need to put in on very thinly so it's see through.- it's very thick sticky stuff.

Thank you, will try and pick some up tomorrow. He doesn't seem in pain, but it looks so red and rawSad

Bepanthen is good for mild nappy rash but get to the docs if you think it is getting worse and they can give you the stronger stuff.

Nappy off time is hard work but fresh air really works wonders.

I also use a hair dryer to get the bum really dry, on a cool setting obviously! And second the water and cotton wool pads.

I used to have real issues with nappy wraps. I made some changes.

I only use baby wipes when out and about. At home I either use washable wipes or cotton wool pads with water. And I make sure that her bum is dry and use a thin layer of sudocream.

Try a bit of metanium until it heals.

Been looking after baby's for over 38 years never had a rash problem
which caused concern. Use soap and water dry then sudocream , control acidity drinks and food. Some baby's will have problems , skin, allergy's, ect. GP will advise.
In hot weather may have too increase fluid's , cooled boiled water, urine will be strong due too dehydration so more frequent changes will be required.

Nappy off time is the best thing of all

redcaryellowcar · 13/07/2013 06:44

have found that bepanthen works on ds, so we do frequent happy changes and bepanthen every time making sure v dry before applying. as much nappy off time as you dare. if has little spots could be thrush, see gp for advice. don't let it get to red raw before going to gp as they can get infected nappy rash which must be really painful! I have heard great things about methanium but it doesn't seem to work for ds, think everyone's skin is different so a bit of trial a.d error may be required.

Red bush tea made up and cooled is great for nappy rash. I've put it in the bath too. I'm using cloth nappies now and find these much better for nappy rash (in that they don't really get it).

LoveBeingUpAt4InTheMorning · 13/07/2013 07:01

A little dettol bath works amazing, just sit him in it for a but then dry with some nappy free time if you can, then cream and bed.

Discomama · 13/07/2013 07:05

I've always found that zinc and castor oil works much better and quicker than sudocrem, Boots sell it. Used it for my twins, now 8 and DS 2 1/2

Wildwaterfalls · 13/07/2013 07:08

Agree with those that suggest nappy off time and metanium, thinly applied and only while the rash lasts.

changechangechange · 13/07/2013 07:15

Nappy-free time. Only wash with water. Use coconut oil (or other oil) in place of barrier cream.

Metanium (yellow tube) is a miracle worker - DD had the most horrendous nappy rash when teething and it was the only thing that helped

wibblyjelly · 13/07/2013 16:35

DS is currently running round the living room naked . Now I just have to hope he doesn't wee everywhere Smile

If you do use wipes (eg when out and about) make sure they're alcohol free. They were hard to get when DS1 was a baby and he had some nasty, raw rashes when we hadn't managed to source any.

wibblyjelly · 13/07/2013 16:53

Thanks all. We've been using Bepathan as well, and its already looking lots better

We use Weleda nappy cream which works wonders when DS has a nappy rash.. which has thankfully been rare till now. It contains calendula which is much more nicer on the bum as it's natural.

DS is in cloth nappies and I apply some calendula nappy cream every night as I know he isn't going to get changed for the next 12 hours... DS alwayd wakes up with a very soft bum :)

mrsmartin1984 · 13/07/2013 23:50

I use real nappies as well. My DD gets far worse in disposibles
