Baby's immunisation

Hey I am a new mum and my baby boy is getting his first set of immunisation today and I actually can't remember my Hca telling me anything about them, I don't know what to expect and tbh I'm a little scared. I am lying awake worrying, A few folk have said give him calpol or ibrufen but is this necessary, I don't want to give ds anything unless desperately needed. Can't sleep from worrying.

Please don't worry - its all over so quickly. Be ready with cuddles and milk and it will be fine. No need to give any calpol etc unless your baby has a temp/seems unwell afterwards - or that was what i was told a few months ago anyway. I hope it goes well - get some sleep! Smile

Agree, don't worry. Before each set of injections the nurse went through what it was for. They're over really quickly. I made sure I had a bottle of ebm ready for as soon as they were over.
I found it easier to dress ds in tracksuit bottoms, less fiddly than a romper.
Good luck, you'll both be fine.

My DD has just had her third set and for us there was nothing to worry about at all. The nurse will explain everything to you at the appointment. If your experience is anything like mine your DS will have two injections, one in each leg. You will have him on your lap and will need to hold his leg steady and his arm out of the way, then turn him over for the other side.

My DD screamed like a banshee when each needle went in but was very easily calmed afterwards. Some babies might be grumpy in the 24 hours afterwards, some might get a temperature (in which case, give calpol), some might be absolutely fine. My DD slept a lot in the 24 hours afterwards.

Please don't worry, remember that you are doing this to make sure your precious boy doesn't get sick in the future so it's all for the right reasons Smile

Ours were last week and were fine- he's got bad reflux so I was nervous, but in the end he had a little cry, cheered up, and then got a slight temperature in the evening. My doctor said that some research is suggesting that it's better not to give calpol etc unless there is a fever or the baby is in a lot of pain, as reducing the temperature can reduce the number of antibodies produced. We just used some cold flannels and then some calpol before bed, as he was too grumbly to sleep.

Lots of girls from my mothers' group said that their babies slept blissfully for 24 hours after the shots and had to be woken to feed - have to say, I was a bit jealous!

Hope they go ok for you both Smile

My dd slept through the night for the first time after her first set of jabs!

I gave calpol an hr before the jabs.... Didn't have any reactions except she was a bit warm in the afternoon. After the second lot she was way more grumpy but fine after 24 hrs.
