why are you looking for organic? Only benefit is for the welfare of animals, so i always buy organic meat, the rest is a crock of shit.

I'm looking for organic because it is not sprayed with toxic nonsense! Thats just what i prefer to have in my daughters diet. :)

While I'm pretty sceptical about organic, that link Is to a doc about American standards for 'organic' and I'm pretty sure the Soil Association who accredit organic in the UK dont permit natural-derived versions of otherwise-banned additives as there's only about 4 they allow. The logic they use for which are allowed is rather ropey though - history counts for more than the amount that gets into the edible product. The SA also required welfare standards for animals, so all UK organic eggs are free range, which isn't the case everywhere. All the UK specs are on the SA website so can have a read and decide how much you care about various chemical levels compared to the levels from packaging, soap, road pollution...

For buying organic, look up veg box schemes or supermarkets in the poshest/hippiest end of town.

ok UK standards. Soil association list of products here. One of those, genuinely chosen at random is DiPeL DF.
here is a study of that product which causes, amongst other things:

An examination of hospital discharge data undertaken following the 2002-2004 Auckland Btk
spraying campaign, revealed that:
? asthma discharge rates doubled over the period 2002-mid 2004 for boys aged 0 to 4
years old in the [spray] exposed population
? discharge rates also increased for girls aged 0 to 4 and 5 to 14 (50% and 80% increases,
respectively)
? comparing the year 2001 with 2004, there was an increase in asthma admissions in
residents inside the spray zone, but a decrease in asthma admissions in residents just
outside the spray zone. These trends were statistically significant.
? monthly hospitalization rates among the exposed group gradually increased over the
period under study while national rates remained relatively constant, resulting in
statistically significant increases for the spray population compared to national rates in
years 2003 and 2004
(Gallagher et al. 2005)

and

Health Effects (Warnings)
? ingestion
o if ingested, may cause bacterial gastroenteritis: abdominal cramps, vomiting and
diarrhea [EG7826, EG7841 strains] (PAN Database) o ingestion could result in gastrointestinal irritation, purging, fluid loss, drop in blood
pressure and hypernatremia, with long term exposure producing pneumonociosis
and lung fibrosis (Valent 2001a) (this refers to the DiPel PRO DF formulation,
which includes unspecified inerts)

Wholefoods in Giffnock might be a good place to try. You might also get some in Waitrose in Newton Mearns.

WestieMamma · 04/07/2013 11:28

I agree with Carol. My husband is a chemistry prof, he says organic is a con. They can and do use some really nasty chemicals which are allowed because they are 'legacy' products. He says modern pesticides/fertilisers are far safer than legacy stuff. A lot of them were developed because of the risks of using legacy ones.

Judez99 · 04/07/2013 21:23

Try Waitrose in Newton mearns or Byres rd. They should have a good selection of organic produce.

Cuddlydragon · 04/07/2013 22:10

wholefoods in Giffnock has loads and Sainsburys Darnley and Tesco Silverburn are well served to - Def wholefoods though.
