Hi im new to this hopefully someone will have some advice. My lo is just 6 months old and since he was born most nights have been horrific with getting him to sleep. I have frequently slept on the sofa downstairs with him in his carrycot as he just will not go upstairs. most nights I only get 3 hrs broken sleep and im at the end of my fuse. He will cry (more like a blood curdling scream) for over 3 hrs at a time even when being comforted. I have made sure he isnt hungry have a temperature or need changing and done all the usual things but nothing makes a difference and I dont know what to do now. He is so tired now he just screams and I dont think he can even stop himself or even really knows why he is doing it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated we are both really suffering.

sorry you're going through this it sounds so tough :( my little boy has never been an easy sleeper (or anything for that matter!). when mine is refusing to settle in his cot I often use a fisher price seahorse which lights up and plays soft lullabies for 5 mins. it distracts him from his screaming long enough for him to calm, realise how knackered he is and eventually settle. most of the time... not great for long term but a good prop for getting your sanity back.
Also you could spend time together in his room playing games etc maybe to make him like being in there?
good luck, tiredness is the worst :( xx

Whats his bedtime routine? How does he nap in the day? How is he fed (I wondered if he could have reflux). Have you tried rocking him?

silverangel · 29/06/2013 22:07

I thought reflux too...

This must be so awful for you both. Has he been checked for cows milk allergy and tongue tie?

Try Sound sleep by Sarah Woodhouse too. Your library may have a copy Smile

Hi thanks for your comments. My lo is on nutramigen allergy milk with infant gaviscon in and has been for some time now and his sleep has not got any better. During the day is a battle as well it didnt used to be but all he does now is scream whenever he is tired I try and rock him push him around in his pram and he still just screams. He wont let my husband near him either he just wants me. I have also bought a musical mobile and a musical light show for his cot at bedtime but he cries so loud he cant hear it and he shuts his eyes so he doesnt see it either. We sound like a total lost cause as im writing this he is screaming as loud as he can because he is tired. I know if I could get him to sleep more we wouldnt have all the screaming because he is tired. Any more suggestiong would be greatly appreciated as im fast running out of ideas.

Are you under a Paediatrian? If not I'd ask the GP for a referral. This doesn't sound like a straight sleep issue, especially with his allergy.

cutecookies · 01/07/2013 17:53

I will although he hasn't actually been diagnosed with an allergy the doctor put him on it because ordinary milk and staydown milk did not stay down he thought it may be so prescribed this and that was that. Think im going to get an appointment tomorrow because I have found out today my lo is taking twice the recomended daily dose of gaviscon on the say so of the doctor. I feel really let down to be honest.

He needs better medication than gaviscon. It's truly woeful for severe reflux. Too much gaviscon may also be making him constipated, compounding the issue.

I found white noise and a pitch black room was the way to get mine to sleep for naps and bedtime (both had reflux). I wouldn't leave him to scream - pick him up and rock him to sleep.

Hi

It's awful isn't it...!
DS is 6m and has been on Omeprazole for reflux and Aptamil Pepti milk. We tried Lactose free milk and Gaviscon and Rnitidine prior to our current combination. Life was truly miserable. I have never been so torn - thrilled to finally be a mum after so many years thinking it would never happen but miserable as ALL he did was scream.

controversial but have you tried letting him sleep on his tummy - to this day my DS will only sleep on his tummy. If he rolls himself onto his back he will scream until turned over again. Also, we have to use white noise. We found this out as a tiny when I tried the hoover and it soothed him. He now has an app running on my iPad. It has to be surprisingly loud to have an effect!!

Also, have a look at Dr Harvey Karp and also Dr Sears and see if anything adds up with either of them...

If your Lo hasn't been diagnosed with an allergy yet, have a read of this. It explains everything, including what to expect from your GP appointment Smile
